Phuket sees wave of cancellations over New Year

PHUKET: -- Over 20 percent of people who had been planning to travel to Thailand's southern resort island of Phuket over the New Year season by coach have already returned their tickets, as the island attempts desperately to return to normal following Sunday's tsunamis.

Mr. Yuen Suwanmanee, head of the Phuket coach station, said today that over 20 percent of people who had made coach reservations had asked for refunds, while tourists were still crowding the coach station in order to get transport off the island province.

The coach station is laying on an extra 6-7 coaches a day, as tourists who survived the tidal waves try to go elsewhere for the New Year.
