Saline/salty Ground

Featured Replies

My wife has 50 rai in Bankok (Turtle village) in Isaan, and a lot of the ground is infested with salt.

We don't live full time in Thailand (Come every five months for a month)

The salty ground is about 15 rai and is low lying and is a shallow lake during the wet season.

We would one day like to build a house on the land, and would like to plant it all in trees, possibly around a lake? We are not that interested in farming the land.

Need some advice on how to try and salvage the land.

Many years ago in West Australian there was lots of work done on rehabilitaing this type of land, does any one have a web site/knowledge of how successful this was?

If i dug the low lying ground out as a permanent lake, would this help?

What trees are salt resistent?

Any advice would be appreciated

If you go around Thailand's coastal areas, you will see that there are some trees that thrive there. One type of tree is Casuarina equisetifolia (Son Tha-leh). The other is known locally as Hoo Kwang (Deer Ear). I know that coconuts grow well along coastal areas as they are able to leach off salt.
