Puea Thai Party Divided Over Leadership

Maybe they should invite former-PM Samak back to the snake-pit ?

Or perhaps not, since he stood up to Departed-Leader, who has quit Thai politics for good, but just can't seem to resist pulling the strings, when not instigating civil-war, or looking for gold-mines in Africa ? :)

Actually, I think there's no shortage of people that think things have progressed beyond Samak's brand of Thai Rak Thai and People Power Party - style of governing.... and while still short of the optimum position desired, the Democrats are already a stark contrast...

Burma lashes out at Thailand over Suu Kyi

Burma lashed out at Thailand on Sunday for interfering in its internal affairs after the government called for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Burma said the statement last week by the Foreign Miinstry "deviated from the practice of ASEAN," under which countries supposedly must not criticise other members.

"It is tantamount to interfering in Myanmar's internal affairs," said the Burmese statement, printed by the mouthpiece media.

There was even some ridiculous nonsense speculating about a Democrat even taking to the Peua Thai Party...

That man has now come out and in an effort to set the record straight....

basically said that he would rather physically run down the middle of the express lane on the Bang Na elevated highway into the head-on path of an oncoming double-decker VIP bus doing 140k/hr. than hook up with these low-life Thaksin lackies....

Korbsak: I’m not leaving

Bangkok Post

Korbsak denies plans to head Puea Thai

Defection rumours a ploy to sow discord

Deputy Prime Minister Korbsak Sabhavasu has dismissed rumours he will leave the Democrat Party to head the rival Puea Thai Party.

The Deputy Democrat Leader was upset yesterday at reports he was swapping parties, describing them as a ploy by the opposition camp to stir divisions in the ruling party. The reports were groundless, he said, adding it would be unthinkable for him to leave the Democrats.

"I would prefer dying [than to lead the Puea Thai Party]," he said.

"I've said all along that the real Puea Thai Leader is Thaksin Shinawatra."

Puea Thai party willing to take Mr. Korbsak as member

BANGKOK, 23 May 2009 (NNT) – The Puea Thai party has expressed its willingness to take Deputy Prime Minister Korbsak Sabhavasu as the party’s new member, believing that he could work alongside with everyone in the party.

Mr. Suchart Lainamngern, a Lop Buri MP from Puea Thai party, said today that if Mr. Korbsak wanted to join his party, Puea Thai would be more than pleased to welcome him as Mr. Korbsak was a capable man with extensive experiences.

Mr. Suchart expressed his belief that Mr. Korbsak would be able to work alongside with all Puea Thai members including former deputy prime minister Olarn Chaipravat who was expected to be in charge of economic affairs if the Puea Thai party rose to power. The MP said the two people used to work closely together.

Korbsak may have turned down the position but it does send out a clear signal - that a job (maybe the top job) is on offer for the right person.

And it also sends out an even clearer and louder signal that if not even the PTP yobs themselves want the job... why it is to be wildly considered such a "plum position" for ANYBODY is anybody's guess...

The PTP is in a shambles... it's a train wreck that nobody wants to be the conductor on.

Yongyuth in U-turn over standing down as Pheu Thai Party Leader

Yongyuth Wichaidit, Leader of the opposition Pheu Thai Party, yesterday made an about-turn on his decision to resign his position, amidst growing disagreement about his successor.

A party source said a suitable successor had yet to be found, as the available candidates from within the Party, such as

The main opposition party has scheduled to hold a meeting on May 31 to discuss the leadership issue.

Pheu Thai chief Yongyuth wants to stay on

The move to find a new Pheu Thai Party Leader has met with a hiccup with the current Party Leader having changed his mind on resigning and party members resisting the new Leader reportedly supported by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, sources said yesterday.

The latest report says Yongyuth has changed his stance, refusing to step down even though the Party has scheduled a meeting on May 31 to elect a Party Executive Board and a new Leader.

Puea Thai Party meeting on May 31 cancelled

BANGKOK, 27 May 2009 (NNT) – The Puea Thai Party has canceled its Party meeting earlier scheduled on May 31, expressing its wish to see the conclusion on the charter amendment first.

After the Puea Thai Party’s executive meeting, Party Leader Yongyuth Wichaidit announced that Puea Thai Party would send its candidates to contest in the by-election in two constituencies.

Anurak Boonson would be a candidate for constituency 3 of Sakhon Nakhon province while Surachart Charnprasert would represent the Party in constituency 1 of Sisaket province, said Yongyuth.

He also declared a postponement of the Puea Thai Party’s special meeting scheduled on May 31 for appointing a new Executive Committee as well as a new Leader.

Meanwhile, Puea Thai Party Deputy Leader Plodprasob Suraswadi claimed that the meeting cancellation was due to the Party’s wish to wait for the conclusion of the government’s charter amendment in combination with the approaching closure of the current parliamentary session.

He further insisted that the cancellation was not caused by the Party’s lack of qualified candidates for the post of new Leader.

Of note is that Ms. Anurak shares the surname of the previous MP office-holder for Sakhon Nakhon who was red carded. Perhaps a nominee proxy daughter or wife of the disqualified candidate?

Bangkok Post / May 15, 2009:

In another case, the Supreme Court yesterday upheld an EC red card disqualifying Puea Thai Party MP for Sakon Nakhon Pongsak Boonson. The court also ordered a by-election in the province's Constituency 3 where the red card was issued. Pongsak was a member of the People Power Party at the time of the offence.

A red card bars a candidate from a by-election and disqualifies him or her from politics for five years. A yellow card means a candidate is suspected of cheating but can stand in a new poll.

Pheu Thai Party delays picking new leader

Pheu Thai Party Leader Yongyuth Wichaidit said yesterday the Party decided to suspend its meeting on Sunday to elect a new Leader and Executive Board pending changes to the Constitution.

He said since changes were being proposed to the charter, the Party would rather wait and see if any were made to rules and regulations in regard to Party Leaders and Executives.

Yongyuth denied that Pheu Thai Party suspended the election of a new Leader because it could not find suitable figure.

Ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra reportedly phoned some top military brass and businessmen to try to get them to become the Pheu Thai Party Leader after the first candidate he backed was rejected by Party members, a source said.

Thaksin called ACM Sumet Phomanee, a specialist attached to the Permanent Secretary of Defence's office, to accept the post. But Sumet had yet to refuse or accept, even though Thaksin had called him three times.

Sumet was among Thaksin's pre-cadet classmates and military supporters who were demoted in the mid-year reshuffle approved by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Pheu Thai Party members had been due to elect a new Board and Leader on Sunday.

Nakhon Ratchasima MP Somchai Petprasert was reportedly Thaksin's original choice to be the new Party Leader, but many factions resisted the move.

Thaksin calls on Chavalit to lead Puea Thai Party

Thaksin Shinawatra has approached former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh to become the new Leader of the Puea Thai Party, a source close to General Chavalit says.

The source said Thaksin telephoned Generak Chavalit on Tuesday to ask if he would lead the party, which is trying to find a suitable new leader. "General Chavalit was non-committal," the source said.

"He needed time to make a decision. But he should be able to give an answer by the time the Party calls a general assembly to select its new Leader." The party executive board yesterday decided to cancel the general assembly to select a new executive board and leader scheduled for Sunday.

Well if Thaksin ("I've quit Thai politics" & "Democracy is not my aim") can become a born-again 'true-democrat', then we clearly live in an age of miraculous U-turns, where any change-of-opinion becomes possible ! :)

payapandbigman.jpg

Payap Shinawatra (right)

nongpu-yinglux.jpg

Yingluk Shinawatra (center, with hat)

Can the big boss stop rats from jumping ship?

Despite sending his siblings to rescue the sinking ship, ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra seems to be finding it difficult to keep his Pheu Thai Party afloat.

Since it hasn't had a real leader, problems within the Party are only getting too difficult to solve, especially since its faction of Isaan MPs - the biggest in the Party - is ready to jump ship any minute now.

Thaksin had his younger brother Payap and sister Yingluk to step in and take charge of the Party, but the cracks only seemed to get deeper.

The real problem came when Payap, acting as Thaksin's "frontman," decided to back MPs from the Isaan Pattana Group - turning these "not-so-important" people into "big" guys.

This in turn angered other members of the Party, so they decided to step back.

As the conflict started getting serious, many MPs who were formerly part of the Friends of Newin faction started threatening to leave Pheu Thai Party for Newin Chidchob's Bhum Jai Thai Party.

Things came to a head when a battle broke out between Kalasin MP and former Friend of Newin Prasert Boonrueng and Chaiyaphum MP and Isaan Pattana member Charoen Jankomol.

Matters only got worse when Payap dared Prasert to leave the Party, which upset other MPs.

That's when Yingluk decided step in and stop the situation from getting out of hand.

After all, she couldn't have members of her Party jumping ship. So, two weeks ago, she decided to meet with 40 Isaan MPs - all former Friends of Newin - at Bangkok's SC Park Hotel.

At the meeting, the MPs begged for fair treatment and asked Yingluck to unify the Party once again, advising her to pay no heed to MPs telling tales about the faction jumping ship. She accepted the suggestions and promised to stop any future conflicts.

"If the big boss continued letting his brother run things, Pheu Thai Party would have broken up by now. He [Payap] is a control freak and lacks leadership," said an Isaan MP, who asked not to be named.

He added that many MPs were staying with the Party because they did not have a choice, while some were waiting for by-election results in Sakon Nakhon and Sisaket before deciding whether to stay or go, he said.

Another former Friend of Newin said some members of his group would be joining Bhum Jai Thai Party for the next general elections.

"Bhum Jai Thai is rising in the Northeast, but some MPs can't go because they don't like Newin. They will have to wait and see if there are any other alternatives," he said.

With all this going on, if Pheu Thai Party remains "headless" and the big boss can't find any strategies to keep it afloat, this ship is bound to sink.

Disowned former Pheu Thai Party MP's Porapol Adireksarn of Saraburi and Jumpoj Boonyai of Sakhon Nakhon

Pheu Thai Party expels 2 MPs for pledging support for Bhum Jai Thai Party

The Pheu Thai Party Thursday resolved to expel two of its MPs for having announced they would join the Bhum Jai Thai Party and having taken part in political activities of the Party.

Pheu Thai Party Spokesman Prompong Nopparit said the Party resolved to expel Saraburi MP Porapol Adireksarn and Sakhon Nakhon MP Jumpoj Boonyai.

The two have earlier declared they would switch to the Bhum Jai Thai Party before the next election and they also took part in the Bhum Jai Thai Party seminar in Sakhon Nakhon over the weekend.

Losing the membership of the party, the two MPs could also lose their parliamentary status.

However, they can appeal against the expulsion with the Criminal Court in 60 days. If the court rules that the expulsion is unlawful, the two can join a new Party without losing their MP status.

But if the court rules that the expulsion is lawful, the two will lose their MP status.

Puea Thai Party expels two MPs

A meeting of members of the opposition Puea Thai Party has voted to expel Saraburi MP Porapon Adireksarn and Sakhon Nakhon MP Chumpoj Boonyai, Party Spokesman Prompong Nopparit said on Thursday afternoon.

The resolution would be forwarded to the party executive for further action, Prompong said.

The two MPs have publicly stated several times that they wanted to join the Bhum Jai Thai Party, saying they were not happy with the way Puea Thai Party worked.

If the two expelled MPs go to courrt and win they will immediatley be able to join any party they want. This is a giant case if it happens as it could open up PTP for a firesale if more MPs start to do things to get expelled, or PTP will face having to run as a party with nominal strength in numbers but in fact with a whole load of MPs they darent expel.

If they by some unlikely event lose Sakhon Nakhon there could be a deluge or at least a massive renegotiation to stay

For Information:

The 2 MP's do have the right to petition the court, however it is the Constitutional Court, not the Criminal court to which they have to appeal, they also have just 30 days and not the 60 days that is mentioned in the Nations article.

The 2 MP's were dismised under Article 20 (4) of the Political parties act (2007)

Their only grounds for appeal is under the constitution Article 65:

The ressolution is contrary to the status and performance of duties of a member of the House of Representatives under this

Constitution or contrary to or inconsistent with fundamental principles of the democratic regime of government with the King

as Head of the State

Basically the 2 MP's were given full freedom to choose which political party they wanted to join, but once they joined a political party they had to abide by that parties rules and regulations. Under the constitution the Peau Thai Party had full right to dismiss the 2 providing it was voted on in accordance to the rules, and as such the 2 not only lose membership of the Puea Thai Party, but they all lose their status as MP's, and because of the 90 day rule they will not be able to compete in the new election to fill the vacancies.

Chalerm has finally announced who the Puea Thai Party Leader is...

Bhum Jai Thai Party asks EC to red-card Puea Thai Party’s candidate for election violation

BANGKOK, 18 June 2009 (NNT) – A representative of the Bhum Jai Thai Party asked the Election Commission to revoke the election rights of Puea Thai Party’s candidate for the by-election in Sakon Nakhon for an election violation.

Mr. Sitthichok Singhasenee, assigned by Bhum Jai Thai Spokesperson Supachai Jaisamut, today petitioned the Election Commission to cancel the election rights of Mrs. Anurak Boonson, the Puea Thai Party candidate for the by-election in Sakon Nakhon province.

The petition was made following the statement during the election campaign in the province by Puea Thai Party MP Chalerm Yubamrung who said fugitive ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was the real leader of the Party.

Mr. Sitthichok claimed that the action violated the election law; therefore, he asked the commission to give the Puea Thai Party candidate a red card.

He further stated that the photos of Thaksin had been given to the people during the election campaign set by the opposition party.

This would be regarded as an election violation because the Party tried to mislead people as to the candidate’s popularity, he said.

==========================================================================

It's worth noting that the by-election was being held because the previous Puea Thai Party's candidate and winner in the previous election was red-carded for election fraud.

That man, Mr. Boonson, is the current Puea Thai Party's candidate's husband.

Phayup is the one who split PPP by making the previosuly nobody IP group into somebody. He has been very controversial in PPP with some MPs thinking his miscalculations led to Newin installing the Dem government leavuing them hungry, very very hungry.

Sakhon Nakhon is in the upper Isaan, which isnt Newin turf. PTP and IP should hold this easily. Be interesting to see how close BJT can get.
