Tremor Felt in Phuket and Surat Thani This Morning Won’t Cause Tidal Waves

BANGKOK: -- The Meteorological Department urged the public not to panic about the tremor recorded this morning, as the undersea earthquake of 26 December still produced its series of aftershocks.

The Meteorological Department said at around 8 a.m. this morning, there was an earthquake measured 6.2 on the Richter scale with epicentre off the northern coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra – some 405 kilometres from Phuket. Residents in southern provinces of Phuket and Surat Thani are reported to have felt the tremor. There is no report of damage so far.

Mr. Chalermchai Ek-gantrong, deputy director-general of the Meteorological Department said the quake captured this morning would not generate tidal waves of fatal scale either on the Andaman or the Gulf of Thailand coasts.

Fishing boats can operate at seas, although crew should closely monitor weather reports.
