ThaiLife Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Ive just bought a Kingston 8GB USB thumb drive, Ive put a folder on it with some photos, now when I come to check the thumb drive is only showing 926 mb and no folder , ive tried every thing but cannot see my existing photo folder, ive tried to access the photo folder on both a Mac and PC , but no go. any ideas what to do next please.
webfact Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Have you marked "not show hidden files"? Maybe you have marked the entire folder as hidden.
ThaiLife Posted February 15, 2009 Author Posted February 15, 2009 Ive just checked on a PC and the show hidden files and folders was not checked, so I checked it, and re tried to see my original photo folder, but its still not showing, so Ive added a new folder with one photo , and that is now showing all the time, so at the moment, the 8GB drive is showing only 926mb, and one new folder ive just installed. so ive still got a missing original photo folder , and missing drive space ..?
Tywais Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Try using a command line prompt. Select Run > type CMD . In the window type DIR drive: /AH and see if the folder shows (substitute drive: with drive letter). 2nd, If you can remember the name of the folder on the flash drive, type the name in the Explorer address bar. Eg: d:\folder to see if you can directly access it.
sensei Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Have you marked "not show hidden files"?Maybe you have marked the entire folder as hidden. This could probably the case. Some viruses hides the legit folder then replaces it with an application with the same name. Your antivirus might have deleted the application but the original folder remained hidden. Go to Tools -> Folder Options - > View -tick Show hidden fiels and folders.

You could have gotten a lemon. If it is a fake Kingston, chances are you have just lost your data. Try WIndirstat to see where all the drive space went if it is still there... edit: added info

thaiflyer1 Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 ThaiLife...........glad you got it sorted...........ive had same problem before, safest way to put the folder on the Kingston stick is to copy it over rather than move it..............least that way if the stick corrupts you still have a copy of the folder in the original place. I had the problem when i plugged the stick into a hub rather than direct into the pc..........ended up with the stick showing the drive space as 2gb available instead of 8gb but no folder showing up in the drive..............you can reformat the drive through "control panel- admin tools - computer management - disk management" to restore the missing drive space and then "re-copy" your folder to the drive. Hope that makes sense.
sensei Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Is it possible that there is a preloaded software that hides a secret and secured partition?
KingKing Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Kingston got its blog now. You can post your problem there and they will help to solve your problem very fast. www.kingston-blog.com
ricklev Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Some viruses change the folder to a system folder. I'm fairly sure that if you click on show system folders in addition to show hidden files, and then on the accept window that warns you against showing system files, all will be well! Except you wil still have the virus. That's all it does though...
