Can I cancel my work permit at the immigration department in Bangkok?

If I can how much time do they give you on your visa before you must leave?

I have a non-o because my work permit states that I’m working for a charity (which I’m not – (dodgy thai stuff)) – it lasts until June….

cheers

A work permit has to canceled by the charity that sponsered it by notifying the labour department.

On the date it is canceled you have to leave the country or get a 7 day extension at immigration (1900 baht).

it runs out soon - what if I just dont get it extended? The situation is I'm quitting without informing the boss - (dodgy thai stuff).....what's my best option?

should I just leave the country and not bother with the re-entry?

cheers

If you have an extension as soon as you leave it is canceled unless you use a re-entry permit to enter the country again.

The charity should still cancel the work permit or they could be fined.

Hand in what? Are you tlaking about your work permit. If so you don't have to anything with it,

I assume you don't have a visa because it expired long ago. If you have a multiple entry visa and it is not expired you could continue to use it because it is not tied to your work.

Yes you can leave and get another visa.

when my boss finds out I have quit......some time in the near future.......they will no doubt cancel my work permit.

Do I need to leave the country the day they cancel it?

If I leave the country a day after they cancel my WP will I have a problem?

One last question.......could they just cancel my WP without my knowledge?

cheers

You still have not advised what are are using - a 90 day visa stay or an extension of stay from Immigration?

If you are on an extension of stay it ends the moment your employment ends and you must leave immediately or your are on overstay. They will provide a 7 day extension (if you request/pay for it) to get affairs in order.

If you are on a 90 day visa stay there is no effect. You can continue your stay.

You should arrange to leave Thailand no later than the day after your last day of work. Immigration will cancel your extension of stay on your last day of work. You can get a new visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate in the area, and come right back. The WP is not your concern, your permission to stay in Thailand granted by immigration is.

I got my current visa a few years back and it’s linked to my work permit. If my work permit is cancelled then do is my visa……this I know……but what I don’t know is exactly how long I have to leave the country?

They will discover one morning that I’m not coming back so if they cancel my WP do I have to leave that same day??

What if I leave the following day? Would I just pay one day over stay at the border?

Cheers

1. You are still saying you have a visa - do you leave the country every 90 days? If not you have an extension of stay from Immigration; not a visa. Please confirm what you have.

2. As said if on extension of stay it ends at end of employment. You are required to visit Immigration with a paper from your employer and cancel your extension of stay that day.

3. Airport would not collect overstay for one day. Suspect land border would.

I guess I have an extension of stay as I dont leave the country every day.

What will happen if I tell them I'm quitting and then I leave the country 24hrs later?

Believe you mean every 90 days.

If you just yell and run nothing will probably happen - unless you return. The rule is as said - you get paperwork ending your employment and visit immigration to end your extension of stay. If you do not do that I suspect there could be repercussions if you want to work again. Things are getting computerized more all the time so the days of not knowing the left hand from the right are 'slowly' ending.

sorry yeah I should have said every 90 days

I should have also stated that I do not have a contract and that the work permit I have is not really linked to the job......it was something that my employer sorted out so I would not have to leave every 90 days.....

oh and I'm planning on returning (to Thailand) immediately to get my wife a settlement visa for the Uk and then we’re off – possibly returning again…..so I don’t want to burn any bridges…

I would talk with those who obtained the work permit and ask for a letter to immigration that your employment ends on xx day. Not sure work permits even have to be canceled anymore. Take that letter to immigration an cancel your extension of stay. Leave and obtain a non immigrant O visa (wife ID card, marriage certificate and letter from her asking it be issued) and immediately return for a 90 day stay to take care of visa. If you need more time you can get more (including 60 days more on your visa to visit wife as an extension of stay).

the person that sorted out my work permit will not help me in anyway Cant I just tell them I'm leaving and then get a plane up to Laos 24 hrs later?

Will I be in some kind of trouble if I do this? Also is it not better for me to just get a tourist visa??

cheers for all your help :o

I would just leave in that case - that ends the extension of stay in any case. You can use tourist visa if you wish (free currently so probably better choice now). But being married to a Thai you qualify to obtain non immigrant O visa.

thanks for the advise......you think if I tell them 24hrs before I leave the country I'll be ok?? Will there be a day of overstay to pay (that is saying that they will immediatly cancel my WP)??

I would not try telling them if you have no letter from employer and the whole set up was a fraud - too many questions to answer that you can't answer. Just leave without obtaining a re-entry permit and the extension of stay will end. I doubt anyone will question that later as many people make the mistake of leaving not being aware they need a re-entry permit.
