The Thai Police, Legal System

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am relatively new to Thailand and brought with me the media images and limited first hand knowledge that I have been exposed to and would be interested in hearing something more direct.

Basically my image is that the legal system can be draconian and the Police are corrupt and unresponsive/unsympathetic. The view of the legal system comes from the media I have experienced and the view of the Police mostly from a Thai person.

Was spurred to write this because of watching a (ostensibly melodramatically awful) Thai drama right now on channel 7. The father is beating the daughter with a cane...the daughter seems like she is supposed to be about 17. In my country (UK) this kind of thing would be deemed absurdly out of order and the police would come and take the father away.

1. Would it be illegal in Thailand?

2. Would the police care?

and,

3. In your experience are the preconceptions I brought with me fair, skewered, limited....?

Please share any experiences/knowledge you have.

Thanks.

You member 20 month already. Why you speak too much?

1= Probably

2=No

3=Skewered

Hope that helped :D

All joking aside Thai soaps take a lot of getting used to. I now look forward to the Missus getting the remote control ha ha ha :o

Have a walk around and open your eyes and ears. You'll see what the attitudes are.

Sounds like you should stop worrying about what others are doing around you and KEEPWALKING....pardon the pun :o

Yes it is against the law just as in the UK, its just that more case's go unreported here due to fear of reprisals (from fathers husbands, boyfriends) & not having full trust in the police force here.
