Buying Ram

I recommend any authorized dealer selling your laptop brand!

Don't know what labtop brand you own but if its Acer buy it from an Acer service center.

Be on the save side when it comes to labtop Ram

Thanks!

The one that I am updating is a rather old HP Pavilion dv5227tx that uses DDR2 Ram.

Buying RAM from HP is a little on the expensive side. I was thinking of getting a 2Bb Kingston or any similar brand.

Just as a sidenote: Be careful with the Acer Service Center at Pantip Plaza.

2 weeks ago I was need an CMOS Battery for an Acer L310 and as I was at Pantip was going to the Acer Service Center because that Battery you get from Acer only. The Clerk told me that they didn't sell me that Battery, which has a value from THB ~100.00 but I need to bring the computer for to replace the Battery and that would cost me that Battery plus THB 800.00 for Service Charge!

I didn't let them do but was going instead to the Head Service Center at Rama3 Road and was getting the Battery for free from there.

That was the second time I had problem with the Acer Service Center at Pantip Plaza and I'll never go to there again.

Cheers.

If you just want basic RAM and not hi-speed RAM for overclocking (unlikely for a laptop) then just buy from any large shop e.g. J.I.B; Hardware House, Big IT, Data IT etc. Corsair or Kingston Value will work with almost every laptop, 500 baht for 1GB, 900 baht for 2GB DDR2 667. Older type RAM might be more expensive. If you're not sure the type of RAM you require then go to the websites for Corsair or Kingston as they have tools there to advise what will work for you.

I did forget to mention use Rama 3 Service center for Acer, not Pantip. But even in the best shops you can find rotten tomatoes...

That's a rip off! B800 service charge for a B100 battery? That's too much.

Thanks for the warning.

Check out the JIB group, they always have good prices, good products. RAM has a lifetime warrenty, they can help

JIB Group... Is that the name of the store? If it is, where can I find it? What floor is it on?

My own experience with an HP laptop was to wander around the back of first floor of Pantip until I found a very cheap ugrade to 2gb in a little shop. It's still going fine, and frankly paying more is was not really worth it. I find that if you have a little patience it soon becomes clear who knows what they are doing, and who doesnt.

Every shop can have a bad apple. Its one of the joys of living here that we have to be lot more 'buyer beware'. As I said, patience and judgement in Pantip are real assets. After I have whacked a couple of stubborn Porno dealers in the mouth I always feel patient. (In my mind!!)

J.I.B. have a number of stores in Panthip as well as in just about every IT Mall in Thailand. Their logo is yellow writing on a blue background, easy to find on second or third floor. If you wander around you will find one soon enough. Like most of the big shops they will have a list at the front of the shop with prices so you don't need to haggle. You can check prices easily from shop to shop but most of the time there won't be much difference but doesn't hurt to compare.

Where can I buy RAM sticks for a laptop at Pantip Plaza?

I would like to get recommendations about the shops that you trust.

Thanks.

I would recommend buying RAM that is sourced from a reputable distributor, and has their guarantee (warranty) - and I am not just saying that because my wife works for Synnex! The RAM usually comes in a sealed plastic pack with a sticker on it telling you whose warranty it carries. For reference, the Synnex one is a silver hexagon, but JIB (yellow on blue, mentioned above) and Com7 (green, IIRC) are good alternatives.

There are many shops that sell such RAM in Pantip, although I personally find Fortune Town more convenient. It's less of a zoo (why do those porn merchants have to grab your arm, <deleted>?), and it's right next to Phraram 9 MRT station, whereas Pantip is a hike from Ratchathewi BTS.

On a slightly different note, I was in Fortune Town the other day and there was hardly anyone walking around! Is Pantip the same? A friend who runs a shop in Fortune said that hardly anyone is buying stuff at the moment, which I guess means that we're already being hit by the downturn.
