On my main computer which I use for my work I am testing Dr. Web and on another computer Avast - the free edition and I am tempted to use Avast on my main PC as well even if I trust Dr. Web has some advantages over Avast. Until last night when I decided to test the detection ability of Avast with the well known EICAR test file http://www.eicar.org

I realized Dr. Web could not detect the test file packed in a zip file but all others. So far so good.

I testes on my other PC and Avast detected the packed virus files immediately.... but, and that's the reason why I seek advise - in that very moment the test virus was detected, Avast blocked my Internet connection!

Bang! This is something which is devastating for any business when arge downloads is running in the background and the virus scanner finds something "suspicious". I am talking about downloading customers files.

Here my question: Is the a "secret button" to tell Avast NOT to disconnect but kindly ask me first what I want to do...?

Its very annoying if something like that happens when a 900MB download is running and you are at the "99% download finished" line!

Thanks

Maybe you should not trial these anti virus systems, when doing a long and important download. :o

Asking for trouble in my opinion.

There are 2 reason for that killing download by avast

1.may be have harmful Virus in that File

2.Or while installing If u enable Protect Potentially unwanted applications......

If you are sure the file dont have virus then you can download........ for that you want to disable your antivirus.

The reason for this if u download a files it save in the server After downloading whole file then it transfer to hard disk.if u use internet explorer you can feel that after comleting download it will show like copyinf file.

I am pretty sure there is a setting on Avast! that you can unselect the immediate disconnect.

When you open the On Access Protection Control, click on the "Web Shield" box on the left side.

In the first sort of column, it shows sensitivity choices of Normal, High or Custom; It also says Customize, and you should click on that.

Now open the Advanced Tab, and you should have the "silent mode" box checked. You will read below the warning, of sorts, how that will give an immediate disconnect from the net if a virus is found. Set your system up accordingly.

Hope this helps.

I can't answer your question. But I use Avast and have never had a problem like you describe. It alerts me when a file is infected, but it doesn't shut me down.

Avast 4.8 indeed discontinues the download from the moment it detects a virus, and this is a good thing. First you need to understand that most people are less computer security orientated. They easily ignore warnings and do often not even read what is presented in a pop-up window, the only way to get the attention is discontinue the download, it also happens when a user tries to open a website which has some harmful code.

Some people, with high awareness of computer security would be able to download files without virus protection, still this is highly unsafe, as some zip files include scripts which activate when it is unpacked...

Virus's are now-a-day not where they where, now people not only write virus's for fun, now there a organizations which employ very skilled programmers to do the worse things you can imagine, and steal personal information, use hacked computers to hack other computer.

Even today, a lot of Microsoft MSN messengers users are infected with a worm, which Microsoft or most anti-virus makers have no answer for. This worm installs itself in MSN Messenger and random send messages to people on your contact list, even the latest mutation to this worm is that it even starts sending messages to people not on your contact list. And this worm is so sophisticated, that it changes almost daily of it source code. As it has a auto-up-date subroutine, which makes detection by anti-virus software so much more difficult.

I use a messenger called Pidgin, as MSN messenger doesn't run on Linux... and Pidgin cannot be effected by this MSN Messenger Worm. They also have a Pidgin Messenger for MS Windows, it includes also the possibility to connect to ICQ, Google Talk, Yahoo, and the rest of popular messengers
