China Had Its Own Santika Tragedy Too

Featured Replies

The below story was reported today by AAP. The story has chilling similarities to the fire at Santika last NYE. However I think that is where the similarities end. I don't think any corrupt official will get anything more than a slap on the wrist, and if that at all, for what happend at Ekkamai.

Police chief jailed over deadly nightclub fire

A CORRUPT police chief has been sentenced to 13 years in jail for his role in a fire at a southern Chinese nightclub that killed 44 people, state media reported. Yang Zhouwu, former police chief for a district of the city of Shenzhen, was found guilty of taking 300,000 yuan ($A67,227) in bribes from the nightclub's managers and neglecting his duties, broadcaster CCTV said.

Five other people including a former fire service chief, a police officer and several civil servants also received jail sentences of up to six years, CCTV reported.

The court in Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong, said they all bore some responsibility for the unsafe conditions at the Dance King nightclub.

The fire last September was started by fireworks set off indoors and also left 64 people wounded.

An inquiry found the club had failed to take the necessary precautions against fire and had been able to continue operating by bribing officials, notably Yang.

Entertainment venues in China frequently neglect safety and similar disasters in bars, clubs and karaoke venues are not unusual.

How much further can Thailand fall when countries like China can be used as examples of proper common sense justice? Do Thai people read stories like that from China and think "whoa those Chinese are crazy!" or do they think "dam_n! Thats the way its supposed to be!" Do they accept this complete and corrupt society because they think its the only way or do they truly hate it as anyone with a just heart would?

Too many people are to stupid to care. I had friends who were in Zantika that night, the DSI being taken off the case really pissed me off.

Shhhh. Don't mention this again. People were just starting to forget about the tragedy. If more time goes by, no one will remember and then the authorities won't have to deal with the issue.

Ok? So shhhhhh. Continued discussion hurts some important people's business interests, especially now.

Head, nail and hammer.

Sadly.
