A thai student studying in the UK has just asked me a question and I thought I'd put it out here to see if we can help her.

Her boyfriend and her are here studying so are on student visa's. Her boyfriends one is valid for 3 more years and hers around 1 more year. She is asking this: They plan to marry here in a registry office in the UK. After they are married, and before her visa runs out ,can she then change her visa to become a dependant of her now HUSBAND, who still will have his student visa for a further 2 plus years? And can she do this from the UK?

If anyone knows, I will pass any info to her ! thanks guys !

A Thai friend of mine was in a similar position a few years ago, he was on a student visa and his Thai girlfriend was on a three year work permit. When they married in the UK he was allowed to stay as her dependent. Iknow they contacted the immigration office (UKBA now) in Birmingham and they were very helpful then explaining exactly how to go about it.

The Fiend has not posted anyone receiving a settlement visa for a while now. Can I ask is that likely because people havent come online to tell him or they still waiting and does that mean that the delay is regularly increasing over 12 weeks?

Cheers

Yes I think the average time is now getting close to 15 weeks rather than 12. I sent my fax and email from the MPs office today both with a cover note from him. Will see what happens next. :)

I am not the only one who updates the list, but i do update it if no-one else has, Looks like we are going through another lean spell at the moment.

So you mean that people are waiting rather then just not informing you that their visa has arrived? This means that many people are over their 12 week waiting period right?

Best of luck Chewy. You sound pretty level with it all, but it must be a drain for you both.

No one loves M.P.'s at the moment, right? Bet you'll invite him to the party if he helps pull this one off though!

Hi al just wondered if anybody been through same as me and can advice

I have applied for a settlement visa for my fiance she has been to england with me on holiday visa the year before to attend my brothers wedding with her i have been living out here with her for about 3 years and we provided picture of family and us together.

I am just worried as we are not married i explained my situation and provided emails from hotels about enquires to booking wedding on return i stated we wanted to do this once back in uk with family to make the perfect day i added shares and savings my house deeds a letter from my father saying we could stay with him and keep my house rented and added my electrical certificates i got from college as do not have a job to come back to only verbal from job i was at on my return before and added my old job offer, i have enough saving to take care of us if had to wait to get a job.

I am just worried as had hoped we would be back in England by now its been 3 months still waiting and no calls from embassy just wondered if anyone been through the same or if this looks like enough information to be granted a visa.

many thanks

ps thanks chewy and good luck to you and all

Hi jes5133, my son is in the same sort of situation though he is married. All he has is a job offer from his old boss. I think it is a very strong application apart from this, I am not very hopeful without him actually being in work but you never know

It is 14 weeks 2 days now with no news, i have had to change all their tickets twice and it doesn't help that they have to go on 3 separate flights to get home. Have sent 3 emails (2 of them complaints) with not even an answer, also faxed with absolutely nothing back from the embassy.

Sorry not to be more positive :) will post on here as soon as we hear something

Hi Jes5133,

just wondered is your job offer in writing? For me, I think you should be fine as you mentioned you had savings to keep you going, and also your dad's letter saying you can stay there if you need to rent out your house. I wouldn't worry too much about the time, most people on here are waiting at least the same amount of time as you. Ours took 17 weeks to sort out, having had it refused at first.

Am I reading that list right? only 2 people have had their visa's granted in all of july??

god.....

When somebody hears about their visa they post on here. If they don't update the list themselves as well one of us normally updates it for them, but we haven't got any organised system where any of us are informed about a visa being granted. if somebody is shown as still waiting then they probably are. I think we've only had one person who didn't say if he heard about the visa and that was from February.

Are there any thoughts on why there has been such a rush for applications to visit / settle in the UK? Is it because of the strength of the baht, enabling many more Thais to pay for the visit? Or is it the weakness of the pound, forcing people on fixed incomes to return to the UK, family in tow?

think its a few things, monetry, family and study. Monetry, especially for retired guys living in thailand, a few of the guys i knew have upped sticks from thailand and went back to uk with missus, Some are retired military, mid 40s/ 50s some are just plain old retired fed up losing about £200 to £400 on thier pension due to exchange rate. A few boys have got their girl pregnant and want birth in uk, and at this time ,the amount of student visa's applied for will be sky high, as they where in April when i went to hand in settlement visa.

if expat has business in LOS, probably time to cut loose and come home for them due to economic downturn. I know when i i was last in thailand in april, everywhere was so quiet.
