Working in Egypt at the moment and sent my wife(Thai)to get our apartment set up on the net.Now I am no expert on systems and previously in Thailand we had the usual telephone line download. Now here ,my wife has gone for a system that uses a gadget a little bigger than a USB memory stick. This plugs into your USB port and after downloading the software you are on and its very quick!!I am really impressed and its 2500 Baht for the gadget and 990 Baht per month unlimited!!Does Thailand have anything like this yet?

yes, we have that for a while now........but unlimited for Baht599 with a True sim card in the USB stick....but I personally dont bother with that....if there is no free wifi hotspot connection where I am sitting at the moment, I just connect my mobile phone by wireless wifi "Internet Sharing" to my laptop if using a windows mobile system or by wireless "PDAnet" if using my apple iPhone connected by ad hoc wifi to my laptop (HP or AirMac).....that way I dont need to maintain two sim cards...just use my own mobile...

Egypt propably has 3G network with HSPA so it is fairly quick providing there is enough capasity in the network for all users. Thailand using still in 2G GPRS/EDGE networks so speed is lot slower. There is also faster CDMA network in Thailand but in my understanding there is no coverage for Bangkok. Pattaya might be covered though...

I use GPRS/EDGE from 1-2-Call (AIS). There have been ongoing problems with the network throughout Thailand over the last 3 months or more. Typically connection can't be established or connects with immediate disconnect.

I've asked AIS about this a number of times. The best they've been able to do is admit there is a problem, but no idea of when or how it will be fixed. Not expecting 3G anytime soon.

1-2 Call AIS sims are way too expensive because it eats up time too fast....I stopped using my prepaid AIS sim card and got a post paid True sim Baht599 per month unlimited (edge/gprs) and it seems to work rather well when I use it either in my Apple iPhone or my Windows Mobile phone (when connecting either one to my laptop via wifi personal network connection)...
