Prison scraps plan to broadcast daily lives of death row inmates

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's prison authorities have scrapped a plan to broadcast condemned inmates' final moments before execution live on the Internet.

The Department of Corrections' Director-General Nathee Chitsawang told journalists in Bangkok that the decision to cancel the plan came after it was strongly criticized by human rights groups as a violation of prisoners' rights.

''We agreed to the criticism, and it is certainly a very sensitive matter,'' he said.

The department originally planned to broadcast the daily activities of death row inmates being held at Bangkok's Bangkwang Prison until immediately prior to their execution, believing it to be a deterrent to other criminals.

The live web casts were scheduled to begin next Tuesday.

''Instead on that day, we will now carry a live broadcast of the opening ceremony of an exhibition on prison products made by inmates at Klong Prem Prison,'' he said.

However, the department would continue with its close-circuit television monitoring of staff and inmates at the capital's five main prisons, including the Central Prison for Female Inmates, Klong Prem Prison, Bangkok Remand Prison, the Central Rehabilitation Prison and Bangkwang Prison.
