Thai Airways workers rally at Democrat headquarter

BANGKOK: -- Some 100 staffs of Thai Airways International rally in front of the Democrat Party headquarter on Friday, demanding that the government reviewed a plan to move flights and equipment from Don Muang to Suvarnabhumi airports.

They arrived at the headquarter at about 10 am. Speaking through megaphones, their leaders asked Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who is also Democrat leader, not to agree with their company's decision to end Don Muang airport's service on March 29.

They had submitted a petition to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva who is also Democrat leader, asking his government to scrap the plan. A senior Democrat official received the petition on his behalf.

They said they were members of THAI's labour union and claimed that more protesters from several labour unions would come to join their rally in the afternoon.

The THAI company has decided that by March 29, the remaining 23 daily domestic flights at Don Muang would be moved to Suvarnabhumi.

The THAI executives had said the move would promote Suvarnabhumi as the country's aviation hub in line with government policy and help the Star Alliance, to which Thai Airways belongs, by making it easier for passengers to make connecting flights.

The move would also save costs, they said.

Definitely a major international airline should decide its catchment strategy based on whether the staff want to change airports. Especially an embattled major international airline. I assume and hope that they will be ignored and that sharper, more deliberate people at THAI will prevail. Unfortunately, as anyone who knows anyone at THAI can tell you, there are no sharper, more deliberate people upstairs or much of anywhere at THAI. Certainly those that are sharper and more deliberate are kept in line by the vast majority of gravy trainers who outnumber them. The airline provides really fine service from a human perspective and I hate to see it continue to spiral downward in so many other aspects, but right now there's no reason to expect it to improve and a decision to stay a Don Muang, even guised by laughable rhetoric about DMK as an LCCT, would only further indicate a total lack of foresight and business sense.

just a few days before the move it's too late to protest or change a decission

Well, I guess it wouldn't be realistic to expect the company to protest itself effectively either.
