Web Hosting Talk Hacked

Featured Replies

According to a thread on WebmasterWorld, WHT was hacked big time .. entire database deleted .. and much info spread around to file-sharing sites. Apparently, the hacker got into a backup server first.

A long thread and some recommendations here. http://www.webmasterworld.com/community_building/3879428.htm

Wow, total nightmare situation. Your average hacker doesn't pull off maliciousness like that, so you would suspect someone with a grudge to bear ... and knowledge of access to off-site backups.

I've wracked my brain to figure out if my username/password being out there can cause me any serious damage. I don't think so, but I'm changing my password.

Edit: When I changed my password I also read this:

Many of you are forgetting how great of a community there was here and still is. So what, someone got a bunch of emails and passwords. Why would you use your primary email for a forum anyways? As for the passwords, it has never been possible to break a newly-encoded vBulletin password so far. So what makes you think this hacker will be able to?

But I still changed mine.

There is no substitute for having a separate offline backup!

My work site goes onto DVD once a week, and those DVDs go into an offsite collection as a time series.
