Anyone care to roughly estimate the capacity of the above?

Thanks

Your line is pretty maxed out on the downstream.

Guess you can get an extra 512 kbps but not much more before the noise margin drops too low.

Thanks, Sh1t TOT line for ya, hopefully the True one will be better...

i Use . . . TT&T MaxNet Premium package 3mbits . . i download torrents always at 300kb/s ++

. . my speedtest to all servers in Usa is about 2mbits++ download . . and around 0.5mbits upload . . . !

2200 THB monthly . . i like it. . works perfect . . never get disconnected :)

I use 4mb SME cxlosinfo - it is expensive but no traffic shaping, port blocking, bandwidth throttling and 3.4mbits international at all times of the day with downloads from usenetserver using 10 connections at 430Kb/s.

Be prepared to pay a lot for the SME packages compared to other providers so called 8mb service. But you get what you pay for.

Here is the current speed test results from now 18:25 today. Actually the Ping on the SFO test is pretty decent compared to other providers in Thailand who fair around the 450ms-550ms to the same server. Good for the World Of Warcraft players I guess.

Hey Namoo....thank you for the reply. I'm with True right now (4mb plan).....and here are my three speed tests from today. I duplicated yours (San Francisco.....and local BKK) and then ran one from BKK to NYC (New York City, USA) since NYC is where most of the servers I communicate with are located. Notice below in the results the difference between SFO and NYC.

With this in mind....would you mind repeating the speed test one more time......and going from BKK to NYC. That would be enlightening for me and probably many others here on this forum.

Time for all three tests.....4pm Tuesday May 12.

Trueinternet speed test range between 1.5 -> 10 (averaging around 4 at the mo) on the BKK test. Chang Mai I'm getting less than 1.

That a side, had the 8mbs service now for a few weeks, and after the first week it just nose dived. With the exception of thai static seeded torrents, the service is slower than my old 2mb service, and by quite a margin. It's just dreadful. Snails pace. As I've said donwloads that used to come in at 200 kbps + now hover around 10-40 kbps.

True did contact me today. Apparently they have added extra bandwidth, and wanted to know if I had noticed. The answer is No.

I explained that I will still be getting a bill from them at the end of the month even though i'm not getting what I pay for, and that in all honesty i feel like I'm being ripped off.

I also explained that I will give it a few more weeks, but if there is no improvement I will downgrade my package or maybe look elsewhere.

The only thing I will give them is that their customer service is always polite, which is something you can take for granted compared to back in the UK.

How much is the 8mb package anyway? I can't seem to find any solid info on the True website that's not in Thai.
I just signed up the other day and I'm staring at the order form where it says THB 2,200 for the 8MB connection standalone. Of course with all the marketing gimmickry, that price changes based on whether you have True Visions or whatever other True services. I got the 4MB. I work online full time, so of course I could use a real 8mb connection, but having used True's promised high end services in the past I have no faith in their ability to provide what they're pushing. Internet service is one of the only areas where you would ever heard me say, "Man, Manila blows Bangkok out of the water." In fact it's absolutely the only area, and that's mostly only because I'm around tons of call centers I presume. It's not like PLDT is particularly on the ball in general.

Can you share the Line Attenuation and Noise Margin?

My line stats is as follow at 4Mbps and they said I cannot get 8Mbps.

noise margin upstream: 20 db
output power downstream: 10 db
attenuation upstream: 14 db

noise margin downstream: 15 db
output power upstream: 11 db
attenuation downstream: 29 db

SoMeOnEnUlL, can you explain to me how I test my line to see if I can get a faster connection please? :)

You can check above values at your modem's information page, mate. I am not expert on this, but there are usually two things you need to know; noise margin and line attenuation. Go to your modem by typing your modem IP (probably 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 ) at internet explorer/firefox. Login with username and password (default user name and password for TRUE is admin/admin if I remember correctly). Look for the two keywords, noise margin and attenuation. Depends on type of modem you have, you'll see the information on status page or statistic page(If you happened to use zyxel or billion I can probably tell you step-by-step how to find the values). Once you get the values, you can check the estimate line capabilities at the following link. It's not very accurate but it can tell the maximum speed you'll get with your line.

Good luck.

Maxnet 3MB SME (Premier) @ 2236B/month

476658460.png

A lot has to do with how your traffic is routed along with the speed of the test server.

In my case New York is usually slow, especially at night when everybody over there is awake!

West coast for me always give much lower latency and better speed, although testing between two servers just 50 miles apart can give big speed differences.

Jeez, I can't believe this has been around for so long. I only learned about it this month. Signed up for it cuz I was paying 2,400 for 5 Mb and maxing that out. I can hopefully max out the 8 Mb now. Gotta wait 2 days before it's updated though.

Yeah I noticed the new promotions to. I have had 2.5 mbps for a long time and I noticed that 4 mbps was 50 baht cheaper than my 2.5 mbps. The girl checked and she said my line could do maximum about 4 mbps, so I could not sign for the 8 mbps .... . So I went home and checked. After 3 days my connection became the slowest it has ever been. Nothing worked, so i did a speedtest at the speedtest site.

Bangkok close to 4 mbps.

Singapore .2 mbps

Amsterdam (one of the biggest internet exchanges in the world ... ) .1 mbps

Pissed of I called True. The girl on the phone said that there is a problem with my line. My answer was, I am sorry toots the connection in Thailand is perfect (I speak a reasonable amount of Thai so the whole conversation was in Thai, also I was a network administrator for part of my life .. ) it is when I visit places outside of Thailand that there is a problem. She kept on insisting that the problem was with me and not with True ....

So she asked me stupid questions like:

What brand is your router, is it wireless ohhh maybe if you stick a cable in it will be faster .... etc etc etc

I like the fact that a phonecall on a fixed line in BKK is only 3 baht no matter how long you talk, because I decided to keep her busy on the phone as long as possible. In the end I got transferred to a technician. Whom admitted that the problem was with them. He told me what I already knew ... we all share the same bandwidth internationally, so if there are 5 people and there is 10 mbps everyone gets up tp the max of their package or 2 no matter which package you have. If there are 10 people everyone gets 1 mbps etc etc. There is no sharing according to what you pay.

Basically I know that they will never give me my 4 mbps internationally but I told him, listen if I pay for this package I would consider it fair to get at least like 1 mbps on average. Since that phonecall which took over an hour in total my rate (judging on my torrents) has gone up drastically and I am now getting about 100 kbps most of the day on torrents seeded mostly from Dutch filesharing sites. It used to be 20 kbps. Some days it even goes up to 350 every now and then :)

Moral is: do complain, be polite, be persistent and speak Thai ..... and make sure you have the time to get to speak to a techie.

On Speedtest, I got 960.6 kB download and 51.5 kB for my upload to the Bangkok server. To Los Angeles, my I got 196.6/19.4. To Hong Kong, 510.5/45.1. Pretty good since it's about double my old speed. Can't beat the price. The connection has been dying often though. Haven't figured out he problem yet. I just reset the modem so it can reconnect the ADSL.

I am in Chiang Mai where True previously only had cable internet which is quite good. I already have it at my bar but I want to get internet at the house too. The True cable doesn't go as far as my house though. True has just started ADSL in Chiang Mai and they say it will be ready where I live sometime next month. Does anybody know what it is like? I was thinking that because its a brand new service it might be good since there won't be many people on it yet and the equipment should all be brand new. Does that make sense? Is anybody else using this True ADSL in Chiang Mai yet? Thanks for any input!

I now have TOT 2mb.  What is the cost for the True 8mb, and overall, is it True better or at least the same level of service?

Posted

bonobo - See this post for prices. I've never had TOT, so can't compare, but judging by most of the comments about them here it would seem that True certainly couldn't be any worse. As I've said on numerous occasions before, I've never had any problems with True (after connection, their pre-sales service can be bizarre to say the least). The connection's never once been down for any significant period in well over 2 years (2 different apartments). Speeds are usually decent enough (I'm on a 2MB package, but I get 3MB - no idea why). Can't comment on the 8MB package, but you might want to consider that if your phone line can't support this kind of speed (many can't), you may end up with a worse and far more unreliable connection than if you had chosen a 2-3MB package. This is the main reason I never upgraded (cost is not an issue - it's only a couple of hundred baht more than I'm paying now). Bear in mind, you'll also need a new True phone line installed.

Not many things surprise me in Thailand, but the internet connections are still a big dilemma for me. They have so many customers and practice all these overpriced tariffs and the connections are still s%1t. What in the world is going on here?
