Is Wikipedia Blocked Again?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if Wikipedia is being blocked again? I've heard from 2 people using TTT on different sides of town not able to use it for the last 24 hours or so. Thanks!

TTT is having problems with some of their peering arrangements. Its not just Wikipedia, its many other parts of the web. Some sites are fast others wont load at all.. it got better last night in the middle of the night for about 4-5 hours... but its not so great again right now. So no it doesnt seemed to be blocked, just not reachable. TIT

Hi mnbcm

As the owner of over 30 functioning websites, the reality is that no project can be online 100% of the time. Often there are server issues or sites get taken off line temporarily for maintenance (including the certain services from the Google God's themselves). So i wouldn't worry too much about a site being banned just because you can't access it. Unless, there was a definite ban previously on this particular site as there was with MySpace a while back?

Most sites that are down don't stay down for long, so it's just a case of checking back periodically.

If Wikipedia was down for 24 hours, there would be plenty of talk online so that's not likely the issue. Seems strangely "coincidental" that it's gone with all the buzz going around about tomorrow's protests. I guess I'll have to dust off my encyclopedia and find another source of information today. *gasp* :o

Just on it. Workin fine.

No probs on this side of town.

Which side of town? It doesn't work on this side of town.

Seems some are having problems in Phuket so probably a specific ISP. So, which ISP are members using that cannot access it. Using my university CAT network and no problems.

Using MaxNet in Ban Parded, I have had what appear to me to be DNS problems over the last week, not so much in the last couple of days.

A seemingly random selection of sites timing out ("Network Timeout") but often connecting after a couple more attempts, Wikipedia is the only one I have found to be totally inaccessible no matter how many attempts are made. Wikipedia remains inaccessible, I have just tried again.

Ditto.

I`m on MaxNet with TT&T. Known in the trade as, spaznet. Had problems for the last couple of days.

Could not access ancestry.co.uk, familytreemaker.com, wiki, and a few others.

Done a ping test with a friend, who sent me a free software called, pingblocker, and the affected websites seem to be the ones that travel via Singapore, so I guess that’s where the problems are.

8.00pm, Tuesday evening, all it back to normal, but only just.

Forgive me!!

I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to this cyber stuff....

BUT what is TTT ?????

Count me as locked out of wikipeadia...haven't been able to access it from my maxnet for a few days now. Maybe the cybercops found the definition of something inappropriate??

I thought the same but spoke with a friend who uses a different ISP and he can access wikipedia without any problem, if it was blocked by big brother then all ISPs would be unable to offer up that site.

  • 2 weeks later...

So this problem comes from the TT&T users?

I'm beginning to get sick of this and maybe I ought to change to CAT or something.

I can usually access wikipedia, but it always takes a while. Maybe because there is so much traffic on the site? :o

Wikipedia remains inaccessible to me too. Many sites need to be reloaded once or twice to get them to "stick".

I've read that there are routing problems in Singapore, not sure why Wikipedia should be the worst hit by this. I think Tywais mentioned something recently about the Singapore problem.

I don't know about the Singapore problem but my Internet connection has been terrible over the last two weeks. I would say more terrible than in the last eight months. I get so sick of the stupid responses from technical support at TOT/Maxnet like "run a speed test" or "turn the modem off for 30 minutes" or one of their most popular lines "call back again if the problem continues".

Just out of curiosity I tried to go on to wikipedia.com and no it's not possible for me either. This was the error message....."The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again."

Wikipedia is inaccessible for the 3rd day in a row for me as well using TTT Maxnet. I've noticed a trend that it's usually news sites I have trouble opening the past couple days. The news said they were doing a lot of filtering of news sites that were pro-red shirt. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Using TTT Maxnet.

Haven't ben able to access wiki as well as wordpress and blogspot sites for the last 3 days.

That is ONE thing great about being back in Canada. I actually DO HAVE high speed internet, and not just the ADVERTISED high speed net I get in Thailand, but that only scopes out to be barely dial up speed.

I hated getting knocked out of the net on a seemingly daily basis in my Chiang Mai hotel. And, loading photos was always a long process. Forget about watching anything on youtube video.

That's interesting. I have not been able to open Yahoo news and the WSJ for a few days now. I can access my Yahoo email, no problem. I remember when I was in Taiwan last year I could not even check my Yahoo email. When I asked what the problem was I was told that Yahoo is blocked in Taiwan.

I had an openDNS blockage on myspace for one day and then it came back the next. I dont understand who is blocking what or why.
