AP, 5 minutes ago...

Thousands of anti-government protesters are demonstrating in the Thai capital, Bangkok, despite a declared state of emergency forbidding the gatherings. The protests come just one day after demonstrators forced the Thai government to cancel an international summit and evacuate world leaders from the country.

Demonstrators forced their way into the Ministry of Interior Sunday and attacked a car they believed to be carrying Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. Authorities said the Prime Minister was not injured. Gunshots were reported but it was not clear who fired or if anyone was hurt. Thousands were protesting at government locations throughout Bangkok despite the government declaring a state of emergency in the capital. The State of Emergency bans gatherings by more than five people and allows authorities to detain persons without charge and censor the media. Soldiers and armored vehicles have been deployed throughout the city.

.

If it is true that democrats got the second after PPP, why they don't want to schedule a new election within near future?

I don't know about the result on Dec 2007 election, but I heard something about coalition after Somchai was turned down.

if Abhisit is a real hero, then he should admit that the airport closure is a crime and he must do something against the perpetrators.

He did that in Hardtalk last week, and he he also said legal action was taking by the juridical system against the responsible ones. There are several law suits filled;

I think the poster was saying he says things but does not do them. Law suits may have been filed but nothing is happening. The legal system can work faster if it wants do, depends who makes the initiative

so once and for all THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT IS LEGITIMATE. that's a fact !

This is where political problems begin, when people believe that anything politics is FACTUAL. One mans criminal is another mans hero.

Politics is about nothing more than opinion, and in a democracy the concept is that the bulk of opinion rules. I think many of the problems in Thailand's politics

is the fact that the masses of those with a politcal OPINION confuse there feelings towards individuals with anything to do with politics. Thai's are a very emotive bunch, and thats a problem in politics.

From what I can see, the intersections are being taken back by the military. Shots have been fired. The military are carrying wounded off on stretchers. Wounded seems to be from both sides. The intersections which the Reds had controlled are now freed up. The pictuers show a taxi in shambles in the middle of a road and you can still hear shots being fired. Only Red shirts I can see are the wounded or, perhaps, dead.

The clearing process in Bangkok is underway.

good, that took long enough, now all we need is for someone to escort Thaksin back here to be dealt with

why stupid?, are these guys stupid too?

A group of 20 former army officers, senators and businessmen of Thailand on Monday offered a one-million-baht (some 28,600 U.S. dollars) bounty for the arrest of exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who faced arrest warrant on corruption charges in Thailand.

...I don't know the qaulity of the average officer or NCO in the Thai army but I doubt there was any leadership there, NCO or officer-wise. Just a bunch of conscripts told to park their apc at an intersection and "wait for further instruction".

I can tell you the quality. Poor. Any armor officer worth a d*mn knows a tank without infantry support is about as useful as tits on a bull. And anything less than infantry platoon strength (approx 47 men) is ineffective in riot situations. So, not only are there questions regarding the quality, effectiveness, and loyalty of the grunt level troops, there are serious questions about the intelligence of the individuals commanding them.

All I can imagine is they intended them to be a visual deterent rather than an effective riot dispersing tool. All they've done is play into the hands of the red shirts; given them a weapon with which they can escalate the current crisis; and looked foolish doing it. :o

I hope that the current government lets the Thai people know what a tremendous "loss of face" Thailand has incurred because of the hooligans in red. Under the direction of the banished Thaksin, Thailand has lost face in the International community. This is very bad manners and very rude to the Thai people's reputation. Something I was told is very near and dear in the hearts of the general Thai populous. So if the current Prime Minister were to exploit what a fool Thailand has been portrayed as, would not the general population dig in deeper to resist this deposed leader that lives in exile?

But Thaksin, as a fighter for justice, will surely come home voluntarily to face his accusers, since he is undoubtedly totally innocent of all charges, or can afford enough 'lunch-boxes' to go round ?

I still find it creditable, that the reward was offered for his arrest, and not his assasination, Amazing Thailand ! :o

About time Thaksin jumped on a plane to lead the fighting, 'eh? Just like he promised.

Will believe it when I fuc_king see it.

That was 24 hours ago, when the first shots were fired, perhaps flights from Nicaragua are full or delayed ? :o

Reds, Yellows, Blues, and probably some Pinks too. All with small minds and big ideas. What a mess this has become. First of all, you have a country with such a low educational standard and requirement, that 200 baht can buy anything concerning a following or vote; next, you have an elite percentage that DO NOT want the "lo-so's" to ever get out of their rice paddy; and an elite that want more more more.........so they can say, "I have more than you do".....GREEDY folks with juvenille minds. When the USA offered to help in the south, they were told, "we have it under control and don't need your help".........I beg your pardon!!! The Thai armed forces couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag, and the "save face" attitude is more important than winning or getting the job done. From what was and still is perceived as the "Land of Smiles" is a dam_n joke and anybody with half a mind knows it. Been here 10 years, own property, and speak the language, so I know something about this country........and it stinks!!! So, you folks out there who blatently patronize everything Thai.....take another good look and pull your head out of........................! I do believe that the SAS and Special Forces could get the south cleaned up in short order, but of course the government leaders of England and the USA have to keep out of it and let the military do what they do, so another VN, Iraq, and middle-east mess is not repeated. This gives me a head ache, so I think I will have a Tiger Beer and calm down. Chohk Dii people!!!! DW Pattaya

Always knew they should have been colonised by the Brits and had some common sense and honesty knocked into them. You don;t get this sort of carry on in Singapore now do you?

I agree DragonFly. Iam not a Brit. However Iam sure if the Thais were colonized, they

would have alot more common sense :o . eg Malayasia,Singapore

Haha... yeah, and Cambodia, Vietnam, and Burma. Common sense indeed!

And the Philippines, "controlled", for hundred of years! LMAO

I third that! LMFAO. Singapore, the fasciast little country where there is no trial by jury, where there has been a one party rule for roughly 60 years, where one can be arrested for litteraly spitting on the ground or spitting your gum on the ground, where foreigners are publicly caned for very minor offenses, where there is the death penalty for marijuana.... and the list goes on. About the same for Malayasia. A Thai citizen was recently put to death by the Malayasian goverment because he had a kilo of marijuana (supposedly even shwaggy leafy crap)...and, of course, he did not have access to a jury trial. Killing people for posession of plant material that one can not even OD and die from is pure insanity. Reminds me of Thaksin's hard-handed policy. Yeah, lots of freedom in the Islamic countries of Singapore and Malaysia. What a joke. Those who like the draconian systems of Singapore and Malaysia should move there. Myself, I prefer freedom. I will be working, chilaxing, birding, mammaling, herping, visiting Khmer ruins, and practicing kun khmer in Cambodia. Have fun in Singapore and Malayasia.

Once you allow people to believe that they can influence how they are governed - other than through elections then any country is on the road to disaster... - the job of the police and army should be to eforce the law equally - clearly they are not doing this. If they do not follow the edicts of the elected government then surely they are breaking their oath of allegance to their King and country - its that simple.

The job of a soldier or pollice officer is to follow orders - The soldiers depicted celebrating with protestors should be identified and court martialled irrespective of whether the protesters were red, yellow, blue or any other colour! - I am sad for all the people who will lose their jobs in that industry (and as a consequence people in other industries)...Thailand needs a call for unity from a non partisan leader (I dare not say more!) There needs to be an independent judicial review of all governement and political bodoies that is open to public view and which has the authority to make decisions not based along party polical lines. Their aim should be to reform the whole structure to eliminate the ability of politicians, army and the police to make personal gains from their position - and given the level of corruption that exists it must mean the reform of people known to be corrupt in the past. You cannot blame Thaksin or any politician for taking advantage of a system that is endemic at every level - from getting the best table in a restaurant, buying your children out of the army to influencing multi million pound deals - it all has to change. At the same time you need the expertise of formerly corrupt people to change things - bringing in a host of new younger people simply wont work as a: they have the same potential to become corrupt and b: they wont have the experience to avoid being drawn into the game

Thank you. If only the Thai people would come to the same conclusion and CHANGE. :o

Looks like it will be a new difinition of 'low season' this year. A real shame for the silent majority.

Always knew they should have been colonised by the Brits and had some common sense and honesty knocked into them. You don;t get this sort of carry on in Singapore now do you?

Singaporean style government is exactly what Thaksin wants to have in Thailand.

As the records shows, it is good for Singapore.

However, is it good for Thailand?

When you have a leader with no popular legitimacy, installed by the military, his only authority flows from his ability to maintain order.

Abhisit has failed on that count too, so he should step down.

Elections should then be called, with ALL seats contested by popular vote.
