รัดรึง

Featured Replies

I came across the following sentence in a short story this week:

ด้วยภาระหน้าที่การงาน รัดรึงราวกะติดหนึบอยู่กลางตาข่ายเหนียวหนืดจนแทบกระดิกตัวไปไหนไม่ได้

The sentence appears to mean in short:

"My work has me so tied up that I can hardly go anywhere." based on the following vocabulary:

รัดรึง [V] caress tightly; fasten tightly; clasp tightly

ตาข่าย [N] net; network

หนึบ [ADJ] sticky; gluey

เหนียวหนืด [ADJ] very sticky; glutinous; viscous

A more literal interpretation would create a longer sentence and might involve a more florid metaphor something like "to be enmeshed in a sticky web".

Lexitron has the following sentence for the vocabulary item "รัดรึง":

"เขาถูกปัญหารัดรึงแน่นยิ่งขึ้นจนต้องแย้มเป็นนัยๆ ว่าจะต้องลาออกจากตำแหน่ง"

"He became increasingly engrossed with the problem that we must assume he needed to resign his position" or,

"We can assume that he needed to resign from his position due to the increasing difficulties in which he became involved."

Can someone offer corrections, confirmations, or alternatives to my understanding of these sentences? Thanks.

Your understanding of the first sentence looks good to me (subject could be I, she, he, etc.).

On the second sentence, I'll just suggest this เขา...ต้องแย้มเป็นนัยๆ. See where that takes you.

Thanks for your input, Khun Aanon, let me try again:

"เขาถูกปัญหารัดรึงแน่นยิ่งขึ้นจนต้องแย้มเป็นนัยๆ ว่าจะต้องลาออกจากตำแหน่ง"

รัดรึง [V] caress tightly; fasten tightly; clasp tightly

แย้มเป็นนัยๆ or พูดเป็นนัย - to imply; hint; give a hint; insinuate; indicate; intimate

Thus,

1. "เขาถูกปัญหารัดรึงแน่นยิ่งขึ้น" - "He became increasingly more obsessed with his problems . . . "

2. "จนต้องแย้มเป็นนัยๆ ว่า" - ". . . so that he (finally) disclosed that. . . "

3. "จะต้องลาออกจากตำแหน่ง" - " . . . he would resign his position."

What do you think?

Hey David,

Yes, I think that you're right about พูด/บอก/แย้ม เป็นนัย ๆ that they all imply hinting at something or saying something by implication. แย้ม itself is defined as 'to hint' in some sources, making แย้มเป็นนัย ๆ somewhat internally redundant but nonetheless clear. I notice, however, that you didn't use this in your translation :o .

Also, though I must admit that I've only become familiar with the term รัดรึง as a result of your post (thanks for that), it seems to me to imply being beset/bogged down by problems rather than being obsessed by them. Perhaps you can find a few more example sentences using รัดรึง to confirm or deny this?

Basically, I think it should be:

"He became so bogged down with problems that he started to hint that he may have to resign."

...or perhaps "pressed by problems" is better.
