Hi,

Having been accepted for a mortgage, my wife and I are now in the position to start the process of bringing my wife's son to the UK. He's nine and I'm not sure which form to fill in, I can't seem to find a visa application form specifically for a child. I've downloaded VAF4 but it seems to be for an adult. Also who would be known as the sponsor, me or my wife?

Thanks,

Dave.

I have been living in Thailand for a few years but will be returning to the UK as soon as my wife and stepdaughter's visas are issued (we submitted them on March 24th). I was also confused about which form to fill in for my stepdaughter but was advised it is VAF4a. Although some of the questions appear to apply just to adults I answered them anyway (eg. are you married?), and there is a section that just applies to children under the age of 18 (section 7). When my wife submitted the applications the girl in the office did check everything (and even advised her that the custody document for her daughter needed to be the original document and not a copy as we had supplied) so I'm sure that if the VAF4a was either the wrong document or incorrectly filled out she would have told my wife. Another Thai lady was applying for her sons visa the same day and, like us, she also had to go back with the original custody document, so make sure you supply original documents (they've told us they will be returned). On the custody point your wife also has to show she has responsibility for her sons day to day upbringing (eg. she regularly sends money to Thailand for his keep, schooling, etc) so make sure you supply that info as well.

As for the sponsor either you or your wife can be the sponsor but as your wife is already in the UK she would have to supply details of her UK visa anyway its probably easier to put her as the sponsor.

On the guidance it actually now says your wife should sponsor him/her.

Thanks,

does it matter that my wife may still be on her original settlement visa? she may have an ILR or she maybe on a one year extension to her original visa depending on what the immigration say at the end of her two years.

Yes Dave it's the same form I submited the applications last month for my wife and my Step daughter

Same form had to fill two in

The form It could be better presented. It is not too clear in respect of Children.

What About Q 7 .2 Will your wife be coming back for him ?

Good Luck.

I don't even have a section 7.2 so my form is already out of date. I have looked on the net and realize it must be VAF4A.

Half the questions have no relevance to a child, why they can't have a form just for children I don't know.

There is so much ambiguity and I've no idea how to answer some of the questions. Also if my wife is the sponsor

she doesn't have the ammunition that I have, I sponsored her and I'm the one with the money and the better job.

Do I put down my earnings as well as hers?

Maybe I should use an agent.

You should put ALL family income down. As well as the sponsors income there is a space in this section for other income, and

the family situation on work and income etc. can be explained in the sponsors letter if nessasary.

Although the form isn't very well laid out when you actually start to answer each question it's not as difficult as it first looks.

Even though some of the questions seem stupid to ask about a child (eg. employment, marital status) just answer them anyway

and you shouldn't have too many problems. As you can download the VAF4a form from the net it doesn't matter how many

times you mess up before you get it right then when you're happy with your answers you do the real application on line.

At the end of the form it actually asks if you've used an agent. Maybe Mariner29 could tell us why they need to know this.

The New Form is indeed VAF4A Dec 2008

We got the old form from Consul in Chang Mia Feb 2009

I filled 2 In one for My Wife and one for My stepdaughter Only to find out after waiting over an hour to submit them at VFS they were the wrong ones.

Gave us Photocopys of VAF4A Bad Photocopys.

Said that they did not have any of the New Forms available

We did not have time to fill them in that day so we had to spend A further night in Bkk.

Went back the following day and they had a stock of new forms.
