How Can I Extend My Stay Past 30 Days? Am Married As Well

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, Im 30 years old from the US. I am married with a Thai girl whom Im met in the US and we got married there almost exactly a year ago.

We came to Thailand two weeks ago (she is going to stay for a few months) and at the airport, immigration stamped me for 30 days. The problem is that Im staying longer than the time that is stamped. I was stamped for May5th when my plane leaves May 7th.

I want to stay longer in Thailand maybe a few extra weeks (even months?) so Im not sure where to go, who to ask and what not. What can I do to extend my stay first and foremost?

And in the future, how can I actually live here being that Im married to a Thai girl? Do I have to get married again in Thailand for that happen? Thanks everyone, great forum! :o

Take a trip to Vientiane or Penang and get a tourist visa (free) which will allow a 60 day entry and can be extended 30 days and even another 60 days to visit wife if you really are slow about leaving.

You can obtain non immigrant O visas being married - they allow a 90 day stay and some places will provide multi entry valid for a year of 90 day stays. If you want to remain in Thailand being married you have to have 400k in a bank account here in your name only or proof of 40k per month income from your Embassy (or here if you go to work). You are married - you do not have to do it again.

Another option is to get an extension for 60 days at immigration to visit your wife. The cost is 1900 baht.

You will need your wifes ID card and housrbook. Also a translated copy of your marriage certificate. The translation will need to certified by the Ministry of Forign Affairs. The translator can get this done for a small additional fee.

As far as getting married again you don't have to. But I do suggest that you register your marrigage at the Amphoe (district office). This will be easy after you get your marriage certificate translated. They will then update your wifes housebook and she can get her ID card with your name on it iif she wishes. Also her Thai passport can be changed to her married name.

Can I clarify this for my own peace of mind as i might have to do this soon.

I can get a 30 day visa exemption extended for 60 days by showing my wifes ID, housebook and our marriage certificate. All for 1900 B.

Correct. But they don't do it back to back. They do it once and then you have to get a new visa.

Excellent. Thanks for the prompt reply Mario.
