Referring To Farang As "man"

Featured Replies

a thai girl i met told me that it was very bad to refer to someone as "man", because that is the thai form of "it" (used for objects, animals, etc.)

she heard another thai lady (potential sexual rival) referring to me as that as sad it was very impolite.

but recently one of her friends referred to me as "man" the first time i met them and said "it wasn't so bad".

what is the truth? why do so many thais casually call us "it"? are we dogs to them or something?
