Thailand-Myanmar road links to be materialized soon

TAK: -- An official plan on cross border road links between Thailand and Myanmar appears to become materialized soon, as Thai and Myanmar authorities are scheduled to meet later this week to talk about details of the plan, according to a senior local official.

Mr. Cherdsak Choosri, the Deputy Governor of Thailand's northwestern province of Tak, told TNA yesterday that the province would host a regional-level meeting of Thai and Myanmar officials to discuss the details of the plan on 3 February.

"At the meeting, we'll discuss the details of two planned road links projects between Thailand and Myanmar. The first one, 18 kilometres long, will link Mae Sot District in Tak Province with Myawaddy-Pang-karn towns in Myanmar. The second 20-kilometre one will connect Tak Province's Ban Valey in Pob Pra District with border Myanmar towns", he disclosed.

Thailand would bear all construction costs of the two projects, he noted.

"For the Mae Sot-Myawaddy-Pang-karn route, the project looks promising, with its construction expected to be completed before the coming rainy season, while the second one also appears to be possible, despite oppositions by many parties, as it will be a new short-cut land communication between the two close neighbouring countries, benefiting both sides", said the deputy provincial governor.

I don't quite see the point of this?

Surely the roads already exists, broken by the relevant border posts?

Are they upgrading the road from mud track to metalled road, if so they should look at the road Thailand has built on Cambodia, which are still "dirt roads"!

Maybe they are upgrading the status of the crossings to full international status.

With this much info we are all guessing.

Nor do I. The road is there, although it could do with a little upgrade. There is also a decent road out of Myawaddy but not for any great didtance. Must be Thaksin's "we need a new road here" department in action again :o
