sanmiguel
I went to the docs today here in Pattaya and for a 5-7 minute consulation followed being prescribed 5 days supply of antibiotics and anti histomine (spelling) tablets this cost me a total of 1250 BHT. Now i know this is obviously the farang price but even still 25GBP is what i would pay at a walk in clinic in London less the tablets. The docs surgery was a bit run down and was just the average kind of place you see in any soi. Now what do people usually pay on average for a consultation with a doctor. and what would a Thai pay as even half of 1250 bht is unaffordable to most i'd have thought. I went to the docs on yesterday also and I'm dismayed that it cost me all of 50 baht for a specialist consultation (abdominal surgery). According to Thaivisa's currency converter, that's almost an entire British pound. Edited May 1, 2009 by sriracha john
Macx
80bahts small towns 100 almost anywhere including Hua Hin, Chiang Mai 200 baht at major private hospitals & small upscale clinics 500 baht, Bumrungrad in BKK and Bangkok Phuket International (in Phuket, of course) 800 baht at one small clinic in BK where I went in for a fungus skin infection on my feet (including the cream which would have cost 200 over the counter). Obviously, this doc was out to fleece tourists. a course of generic antibiotics usually 80-120baht at any pharmacist These are general prices from the top of my head, from my own experience. Many doctors work in hospitals (private or government) during the day and then go to their private clinic after 5pm.

phaethon
What's this walk in clinic in London that you would pay £25 for??????? NHS in the north of England = free They have private clinics, usually near commuter hubs, where people can stop by for minor ailments if they are unable/unwilling to wait for an appointment with their GP or cannot attend during surgery hours due to excessive working hours. There are also free walk-in centres run by the NHS. There is a flash new building visible from Ekkamai BTS called a 'mediplex' it has lots of glass, a 4-storey water cascade from the roof and glows bright blue after dark, can't miss it. It is not, to me, a welcome sight as it is reminiscent of the 'professional buildings' in the US in which medics etc. congregate to form self-referring cartels to try and pay off their obscene debts from medical school by gouging the wealthy and the insurance companies of the not-so-wealthy. Won't catch me anywhere as trendy as a 'mediplex' - you can be sure they won't be charging 50Baht/consult. Edited May 2, 2009 by phaethon

sanmiguel
Cheers it was the doctor on Soi Buckow (spelling) that if you had Oasis agogo on your left whilst facing the sea and walked towards your right for 20 metres some old Chinese guy. There were 3 of the most embarrasing English mouthy pr7cks in there at the time shouting and swearing that they had aids/vd/etc... which is why they were getting injections maybe this boosted the bill. Though if this helps one person to avoid it then its a small victory.

Texpat
Won't catch me anywhere as trendy as a 'mediplex' - you can be sure they won't be charging 50Baht/consult. Do you recommend the run-down, dimly lit, back-alley sawbones who got his certs from KSR? A modern, clean, orderly clinic indicates to me that the practicing docs at least strive to put forth a professional image. The correlation between image and competence isn't 100% positive, but it's certainly not negative. I agree US docs charge too much.

The antibiotics could be anywhere from next to nothing to 1,000 baht + depending on what they are. I do not know what doctors in run down clinics charge but in a nice private clean air conditioned hospital in BKK 300 to 350 for a simple childrens appointment and 350 to 700 for a doctor. Thais pay the same price.

Thaddeus
A couple of months ago I thought that I had a bad wax build up in one of my ears, as I was going to Pattaya anyway one of my friends here recommended that I pay a visit on Dr Belem. Her small private clinic is on 2nd Road opposite Soi 6, just around the corner from the Bank there (don't read anything into the location) She examined my ears and told me that it wasn't wax and I really needed to go and see an ENT specialist. When I asked her how much I owed her for a time, she said that because she couldn't help me, she didn't want to charge me, but I could stick some money in the charity box at reception if I wanted, so I did. DragonQuest
I just paid 1700 baht yesterday.... at a private hospital, Live band, and nurse's are so hot^^ next time i get sick I think I'll settle for a local clinic, government hospitals are too over crowded and the wait is forever.
