I am doing some flight planning for my semi-annual trip to the west coast of the USA and see that there are some incredibly cheap fares out there. My route is BKK-SFO; both Singapore and Cathay are pricing it around B 38k return net. EVA is offering it at B 40k for econ and 50k for econ-deluxe. Singapore's routing is longer than Cathay/EVA as it has 2 stops (BKK-SIN-HKG-SFO) compared to one for Cathay and EVA (HKG or TPE). Therefore, taking Singapore would be a little more tiring but there are no long layovers (each is about 1.5 to 3 hours).

I have not flown Singapore Air in awhile but am familiar with EVA. Can anyone comment on the comfort of Singapore economy vs. EVA. For the same money, would Singapore's renowned service be worth the longer routing or would it be better to take the shorter Cathay/EVA routing? My main criterion is seat pitch and width (I don't care about food or entertainment offerings)...if the seat comfort and spacing is more or less the same, I would likely just save the wear-and-tear and go with EVA.

For an extra B 10k, would EVA's econ-deluxe be worthwhile? Any comments appreciated.

Further surfing has turned-up a business class fare on ANA for B 60k from one of the Bangkok consolidators. If that was a real fare and a net price, that would be pretty tempting.

I am using a website name www.Travelzoo.com it let you compare prices from all the major travel websites, I am flying from NY to BKK next week for $820 total on JAL, I looked for SFO in 2 weeks from now and JAL has an airfare ,round trip, with one stop for $ 717 total. I think that translates to about 25,000 bth, take a look.

Good Luck

Singapore is now using a new 777-300 on the HKG-SFO route and the plane could not be better.

You can take Air Asia to HKG for peanuts and avoid the sidetrip from BKK. Different story on the return, but you could spend the day in HKG eating some dim sum.

Interesting site...I had not heard of it...thanks for the heads-up. I poked around it and found a United flight from Bangkok to San Fran. for $ 1050 in economy. That's basically the price of the Singapore and Cathay economy flights so I would go for the newer Asian airplanes and generally better service on them.

What you think about JAL ?? have you ever fly with them? I am flying with them next week, I hope they are ok, if not , a few drinks would put me to sleep and when I wake up I should be in Tokyo and a few hrs from by beloved BKK. :)

Watch changing airlines when enroute from/to the U.S. or Canada, especially if you are not able to check your baggage all the way through. You might end up going from the 50 pounds per bag and two bags (100 pounds total) for the long-haul run, down to 22 kg TOTAL for the short Bangkok leg.

Have had this happen in the past to friends who've wanted to stop over in HKG, SIN, or other Asian destinations.

I like EVA especially with their 777s (if the engines don't quit!), more leg room than their 747s.

I travel Economy, middle section, an aisle seat so I can get up and move around.

Last year I lucked out and got an empty row on the 777, slept pretty well.

The last time we flew from the west coast was to immigrate to here so I took the plunge and went Business Class.

If at all possible I will NEVER fly economy again, even Singapore Deluxe Economy which I found to be just as uncomfortable as any other Economy Class flight I've been on.

We arrived in Bangkok refreshed and delighted to have made what used to be an arduous journey in comfort.

Try it out.......once you've done it you'll never go back !

I completely agree TGIR that business class is the way to go for these long oceanic crossings. Usually, I take EVA business, and have taken Cathay, Korean, and Northwest business in the past. However, in these recessionary times, I was looking to save some money this trip...and the EVA fare has gone from a reasonable B 75k to over B 90k. The other Asian airlines are double that. The other think I began realize is that I sleep for 75% of the trip so am basically paying 3x an economy fare for a more comfortable place to sleep.

Anyway, I may go for the ANA business fare @ 60k if available or just go with one of the economy fares and then spend the $2000 saved on a nice 2 week vacation when back in Thailand (as opposed to blowing it on less than 48 hours sleeping on a plane).

Try these two sites for shopping purposes for the three airlines,

http://www.itasoftware.com/ gives you a whole bunch of carries and their prices, log on as a guest.

They only book international flights from BKK, good prices on some flights, they charge a premium, but on my EVA flight to the US they were cheaper including the premium and they were very good on follow up.

Re EVA service was exceptional to Taiwan and very good to the US from there, both return lags had very good service. Food was good on all 4 legs, wine was excellent. My Cathay Pacific US trip was similar. I have not flown Singapore.

Friends say the EVA economy plus class is a very good value, especially if you need a little extra room on a long flight.
