more seriously, just make sure there is absolutely no way to change the date on the ticket(with fee or not) from the airline/agent. if you cant and cant travel on that date then there is nothing you can do, just book another flight.

You can claim the tax back, but many airlines make an admin charge for the refund that is a bit more than the tax.

Is the ticket "transferable" to another person? If so, go online and sell it. At a discount, of course.
