Skype Query

Hello all.

I have a query regarding skype. I have had a look at the skype site but unfortunately I'm a bit of a technophobic so really dont understand how it works or what benefits it has to using msn.

If you are in for chat only in this case maybe MSM is the right choice... but Messenger is bloatware.

Personally I prefer Skype. The voice quality is excellent. The quality may depend on your ADSL connection.

With Messenger you can't call landlines/cells - with Skype you can and much more.

I am making a lot of calls to Canadian and European landlines/cell phones

and I have nothing to complain about. The quality is sometimes much better than a standard telephone conversation.

I suggest you install both programs and run your own beta test to determine whats best for your needs.

The programs will not interfere each other.

""SKYPE OUT" service is excellent at night for me (ADSL) when the net is less crowded. I can call any land-line, or cellphone anywhere clearly.

Suggest getting a good USB headset. "Logitech Pro" is quite good and available in Thailand.

I am a major fan of Skype and would highly recommend it. Simply download it from the website onto your computer and open a free account - the person you want to call will have to do the same thing. If you can post on TV then you can figure out how to use Skype for either calls or video calls.

I've had excellent video calls with friends and relatives back home, in UK and US from Thailand using Skype. While the exact call quality will depend on connection speeds and equiptment of users, Skype is free between computer internet users and you can credit your account with funds to call mobiles and landlines cheaply. You and the person you are calling will need internet, a laptop or PC and usually a headset with microphone and a webcam, although some laptops have cameras and microphones built-in.

Negative/dowside comments; there are lots of other companies offering the same service as Skype - Skype isn't innately superior. Also some of my friends in Thailand have told me that they found Skype didn't work for them for some reason.

Hi,

I use both Skype and Yahoo messenger and have no problem calling landlines and cells with Yahoo. Both give free calls to 800, 866, etc numbers. Skype Out charges .021 per minute to US, while Yahoo charges .01. Quality of call on both are the same depending on ADSL connection.

I just use Skype and never tried Yahoo messenger. The demo looks interesting. Would it make sense to switch to the Yahoo messenger? Is there anything better? Or are things at Skype better?

For me, as I stated before I find no difference in quality with either. Also I forgot to mention that Skype has an initial fee of .04 for each call you make to US, if you're looking at cost than you might give Yahoo at try.

Thank you Greg. I just use Skype for calls from computer to computer with video - I am not always happy with the quality... For other calls I use my mobile and fixed line with a calling card with speed dials - it is 85 Satang to USA and 1 Baht to most countries in Europe (+VAT).

I also use DeeDial for calls when my internet connection isn't working. They now charge 20 baht per month if there is no active on your account.

If Skype would just support the Linux community, I would be supportive as well. It is in fact a good product on the Windows platform. It lack integration with Linux and is FAR behind in functionality.

Another problem with Skype is that it use random ports, which makes it VERY hard to prioritize its traffic, to ensure good quality calls. This is a nightmare for any network administrator.

Skype is good, fairly cheap way to call mobiles and landlines and free between computers.

Nowdays you do not need computer to use it. I'm using Nokia E71 phone with Fring. Can do direct skype calls from my mobile phone book same as normal cellular calls. Fring also has access to msn, yahoo, gmail, facebook, last.fm etc etc...
