Importation Of A Private Motor Vehicle From Singapore

Featured Replies

Hi - read a couple rather old & confusing posts - so forgive already.

I can register for private use, the motor vehicle either here in Phuket or in Penang.

If I do Penang because of all the pushups here, I will drive to Phuket occasionally,

if it is safe/advisable. So here is the big Q&A - has anyone successfully imported

a vehicle - which I will buy in Singapore, because of condition/price - into either

place successfully, and what are all the problems/costs?

If you have singaore reg you can bring the vehicle to malaysia or thailand temporarily and just have to pay insurance if you enter by a land border but can probably only get 3 months (book says 12)

If you import the vehicle permanently ie register it in either Malasia or THailand Duty will be payable and the cost will be prohibitive.

If your vehicle is stolen in either country you would be liable to pay the whole duty and taxes ( about 150% of the new value is a guide)
