กะหรี่ ("ga-ree") - literally means "curry", but in a derogatory context it's calling a female a whore.

I always wondered whether this word was derived from the name of the evil Hindu goddess Kali. (most Thais would colloquially pronounce the word ga-lee, or ka-lee).

The above was my question unanswered before the post was closed down in the General Forum.

I would still like to know if there is a connection.

kali = กาลี or พระแม่กาลี, เจ้าแม่กาลิ

กาลี means Kali, but also bad, evil; wicked; sinful; devilish

curry, prostitute = กระหรี่ or กะหรี่

This website http://forums.212cafe.com/amata/board-1/topic-47.html

suggests that กะหรี่ comes from ชอกกาลี which might come from โฉกกฬี.

The last word is an Indian word which means girl.

Kali, also known as Kalika (Bengali: কালী, Kālī / কালিকা Kālikā ; Sanskrit: काली), is a Hindu goddess associated with death and destruction. The name Kali means "black", but has by folk etymology come to mean "force of time (kala)". Despite her negative connotations, she is today considered the goddess of time and change.

While my Thai isnt up to the level of many on here..

I thought the word use your meaning was from galee (garee) thong.. Golden flower.. With the dual use the obvious and 'sitting on thier golden flower' etc..

Actually the full version is ดอกทอง - which is golden flower. Not กะหรีทอง. At least that's what I've always heard.
