Hi All,

My wife would like to increase her english skills with a THAI teacher teaching English in Phuket.

She is probably around the itermediate level ( self taught ) allready but wants to improve.

Not a Thai language post I understand but guess this is probably a good point to start for any reccomendations ?

Thx

My wife is receiving tutoring from a private tutor here in Bangkok who is a Thai national. She is excellent at teaching grammar but if it was not for me to read with her and correct her teacher's pronunciation mistakes the teaching would not be that beneficial towards helping her converse. It really does make a difference to have a native speaker so your wife may want to consider that if her goal is to talk to others and not just read and write.

When I think about two groups, (a) Thai-nationality English teachers I've known, and (b ) Thais I've known with good English pronunciation, in my experience there is not much overlap between the two groups.

Native English speakers are in such relative abundance here, regardless of whether they are actually good English teachers, that pronunciation is generally left up to them. It's an entirely common thing for Thai-native English teachers to write quite decently, or be very good at grammar, but still be unable to hold a conversation.

That isn't a dig against Thais, just a tendency I've noticed. Fluent is a word with many aspects. If your wife wants her pronunciation to improve, she'll need a native teacher, period. (My opinion.) But it's entirely likely she'll find a Thai who can do a very good job tutoring her grammar.
