Martial law to be lifted

BANGKOK: -- The government is planning to lift the martial law imposed along the border areas of the country and replace it with a new security law, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Thursday.

However, he said the martial law would still be enforced in the three southernmost provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani along with the four districts of Songkhla province.

The continuing southern unrest had caused fear among people and damage to many properties, he said.

He said Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who is in charge of security affairs, had travelled to the South on Thursday morning in an attempt to beef up the security measures, and relevant agencies will meet next week to discuss the southern situation and the spread of narcotics in the country.

He said the cabinet will consider endorsing the proposal to replace the martial law with a new security law along the border areas, he said.

He said the new law would grant special authorities to the government while ensuring that officials would not abuse their powers.
