What are you recording?

It should be a kind of a voice recorder. High quality not necessary...

Some mp3 players can do this.

Otherwise buy a dedicated voice recording device. Sony sells them in Thailand, starting from about 2000 Baht.

I have a pocket digital recorder. It's small, easy to use, makes good recordings and is cheap.

What's the brand name and what does it cost ?

Sometimes the recording feature on small (esp. stick-type) mp3 players can be less than optimal, e.g. the mic may not be very good at collecting sounds from faraway, in a larger room; or the recording just crashes halfway through for no reason. Theres no way of knowing which player records fine and which doesn't, unless you buy them all up and see for yourself.

I bought a voice recording attachment for the ipod. In spite of apple's tendency to make stuff that just works, this solution totally did not work. On an old ipod video the battery died after 1.5 hours (the battery is fine when playing music). I bought the attachment used for $40, and still think I paid too much

I would second monty's suggestion and look at one of Sony's cheap IC recorders. They should have somewhat better mics, often run on AAA batteries, and tend to be free of the issues mentioned above. Try the "hardware house", I went to pantip too late last night and they were already closed, but their price list shows quite a few current and last-gen recorders.

I highly recommend the old fashioned Sony tape cassette recorder, the old walkman size. They are robust and pass the test of time, can pick up the quietest of sounds, have great amplification and cost about 2000b in Thailand. Unfortunately they cannot connect to PC though.

Connect the cassette recorder headphone output to the computer mic input and you should be able to play through the computer. Use the Audacity program to make digital files - although this obviously takes (real) time.

My cheap MP3 player has a one-touch record feature, the 2G memory could allow a few days worth of record time.

What's a good portable and affordable recording device nowadays ?

Nowadays?Go with time advance(cassette? - passe!)

Go to Pantip and buy yourself:ballpen or watch, you will find them in the very first stall after main entrance.

They will not only record sound, but also ...video,and.....nobody will notice! They are usb devices, with 2 or 4G memory.

Price - very affordable; pens are better then watches,I think.

I am not sure however if some tv zealot declares this post as inaproppriate(in legal sense).

Also - you can use any digi camera;you can take pixes, and you can talk to it!and no wasted monies on useless gadget.

And do not forget about such obvious solution like:mobile phone!Every phone since the very beginning(XIX century)

is equipped with microphone, did you notice?I use it myself,if I want to record quickly something-not to forget - I call

my voicemail and talk to myself...good idea? And last but not least - old, forgotten answer machine, everybody has one!

1200B,where in ChiangMai? - you have Pantip in CM I believe! You have to look in shops with all kind of stuff from China, its packed in nice boxes, black color;and better take your laptop to try device on spot.

This sort of things were available in SpyShops only for hundreds of dollars, now anybody can buy and play tricks on you.Very dangerous! Its scary to think what stuff

they make for professionals.

I have seen them in spy shops for a little over $200 . that is why I asked what you considered very affordable. 1200 sounds like an okay price. I have been through pantip plaza here in chiang mai and have not seen anything like that but i will scrounge more carefully next time. I have been thinking about how often people walk off with my ball point though and have decided a watch might be a better choice.
