Where would there be a good selection of cigarette rolling tobacco in CM?? Will smoke local stuff if it is decent, but local tobacco in my moobaan is harsh and rolled in banana leaves. are there any local tobaco shops that have more than the pre packaged [ now heavily taxed] import and local tobacco??

Maybe warorot market??

specific directions please and prices. also supplier of decent gummed papers.......not the ungummed local papers that are as thick as cardboard.

I smoke local tobaccos. Three different brands: Lion, Tiger and Dragon. (The packaging is the same, only the animals differ. Maybe they're made by the same company). 5 bahts a packet (a bag?). Available on markets and in small shops.

The news agent on the corner of Moon Muang and Soi 2 has a good selection of paper at 20 bahts.

On Sridonchai (between the Night Bazaar and Charoen Prathet) paper is available at 15 bahts (Riz La +)

Friends of mine were smoking some very pleasant, slightly vanilla-flavoured and mild, local rolling tobacco [ Yah Sen] which had a Black Cat logo, named in Thai something like Dam Meow, but they cannot find this in C.M--their's was bought in Rayong---anyone know where this can be found in C.M.???

I've tried the local lion, tiger and dragon and find them all way too harsh after smoking filtered marlboro......looking for a substitute. Drum, Buglar and Virginia [something from England] are more close to what I would like to find, but as imports, they have suffered the same tax increases.

My search is both for financial and health reasons, as if I roll my own, I smoke less.

If anyone finds a source of Maew Dam, let us know......I'll try anything once!!

funny thing about those 5 baht local tobaccos is that they have a tax stamp inside.

There's a good tobacco place along Charoen Phrathet (road east of Chang Khlan) heading north about 200 yards before you hit Tha Pae on the left... somewhere in the region of Porn Ping. They have Golden Virginia - that stuff from England in a green bag. Although 240 baht, it can't be beat and comes with a pack of Rizla's :)

240 Baht is that for 50 gms If it is compared to "Wonder" cigs it's expensive.

50 gms in the UK going on for £10.00 Cigs £5.00 +for 20

That means 1/2 price Tobaco or 1/5th for Cigs. I doubt it is a money saving idea in Thailand Unless you like rollies. :)

Any of these shops carry cigars that aren't already old and dried out?

I think you'll find hotels are your best bet for cigars. The Chedi has a cigar loungue so maybe start the hunt there? There used to be a full on cigar shop just along from the Brasserie but long gone and I havn't seen another in town. I make do with 'Villiger' which are available locally but far from a quality cigar and I top up on the good ones when I visit KL.

Wow 240thb and you gotta do all the work rolling. That's more per smoke than the ready rolled imports. Are cans of larger quantities available??

That's the price for quality, but still works out a lot cheaper than bought cigarettes. Didn't notice anything bigger although think the 50g is the standard size, with boxes usually having multiples of the 50g.

Have many types of cigar there but very much doubt they have a humidor. What a picture though. You guys snorting on top-end cigars all the while swigging on chang and sang som. :)

I found the tobacco shop on Changklan road and they had a large selection of falang rolling tobacco and papers , rizla @15thb.

I bought three brands from Drum @ 250thb, Asia gold[made in LOS] @ 125thb, and another [no name cherry flavored by mistake] @ 150thb....all 50 gram packs.

Then the wife found the Meow dam at a small local shop for 5thb for [maybe 40 grams] and after 3 days of sampling them all, I can honestly say that the 5thb Meow dam is the best tasting.....smooth, easy to roll, and the price is right. It does come with the cardboard rolling papers, but at 15thb for 50 rizla papers, it ups the price a little......still chepaer than the 4000thb/mo I was spending on marlborough and I smoke much less.

The Meaw dam is easy to spot, as it has a black cat and Thai writing. The one she got for me was green color [mild menthol] in a small ziplock bag, but she thinks they may have a red one as well.

The Drum in that place next to Porn Ping entrance is 220 :)

The drum I got was 'drum light', maybe that's why 250, but one time experiment, as the 'meow dam' that MH so thoughtfully posted a foto of is just as good @ a fraction of the price. No more imports for me.

And FYI, as I mentioned earlier....my quest for decent tasting and priced rolling tobacco was both financial and to slow down the poison input to my body. 4,000thb/mo for marboros @ 75thb/pack is money saved that I can spend on other things much more healthy.

I'm bet you could roll a whole pack's worth of Maeow Dam in a day though. :D

Picked up the green and the red yesterday. I'm not a smoker but like to have the occasional drag with a beer. Found the red a bit hard but the green was nice. Think I'll be sticking to the GV though. After having all three on the go as an experiment it can't be beat and a pack of GV would easily last me two or three months :)

Those after Maeow Dam, just head for a backstreet store and you'll see em stapled to a piece of cardboard. I guess the reason the other places with the top-end stuff don't sell it is because they want people buying their expensive stuff.

The Meaw dam tasted like pine needles to me so I tried the 5B bags at my local store, it wasn't bad but really yellowed the fingers and teeth not to mention the nasty smell. I switched back to Drum quickly. I can't stand the taste or smell of the factory cigarettes in most parts of Asia. In the USA I smoked American Spirit Organic and Nat Sherman truly high quality tobacco products. In any event to spite the tax the inconvenience of trying to get good tobacco has pushed me to my limit and I QUIT after 27 years. In the first month people started telling me I looked younger, I don't care if I do or not, I feel great and have 300% more energy and over all enthusiasm about getting off my butt (no pun intended).

Hi Guys!

Just a word of thanks for the useful info about the Black Cat

tobacco that you posted. Went a-hunting to find the stuff and

finally hit the jackpot in a little store in an alley. Paid 5B for

the said item and tried it out. Hey! - that's pretty good tobacco

and quite unlike the rough stuff I've otherwise used one or

two times. At 5B a pop I sure ain't complaining! - and cut my

smoking bill down from around 50B a day to max 20B, that's

because I don't roll my cigarettes in the early mornings and

evenings (too dark to see anything!), so use bought ones instead.

I admit that I prefer a VERY mild tobacco, but this one is acceptable.

Had that Black Cat bag now for 5 whole days - which is all of

1B a day, and it ain't gonna get any cheaper than THAT! :)

Appreciate your good advice - thanks once again! :D

Yeah, yeah, yeah we all know that smoking is bad for us, but some of us are still addicted and/or even enjoy it and sorry if we offend you purists.....go out on the superhiway for fresh air if my smoke offends you..........

But, that 'meaw daam' is quite good and the price is right. I figured it saves me 1,000thb/week over Marlboro.

I've also noticed that it doesn't have the chems to make it burn [salt peter] that even Drum tobacco has. If you stop sucking on it, it goes out and you can re-lite it later. Probably lessens my intake by 50%.

Now, what I would like to find is the simple basic rolling machine....the kind that has 2 bar rollers and a fabric band . Simple machine that rolls tight even smokes. My hand rolling technique is not the best. Has anyone seen one in CM??

Yeah, I am getting closer to quitting every day, and know that it isn't good for my health, but the more people whine about my smoking, the more I'll smoke!

That place I mentioned farther back in the thread has them - just up from Porno Ping. About 70baht for basic plastic one, 140 stainless, and 200-odd for an auto type one that rolls it on closing the lid :)
