OS Market Shares

The first half of this year is quite interesting about the changes in the Market Share of the Operating Systems for Personal Computers and Laptops (incl. Netbooks).

In January it has looked like that Apple will break the 10% barriere with it's OS-X.The Market Share of OS-X were 9.93% in January.

Linux with ALL distributions were breaking the 1% Barriere the first time an has 1.02% for the first time.

Windows XP has an Market Share of 62.21% in January while Windows Vista has 23.90%.

Windows 7 first released in January 2009 as Beta Version,

At end of May 2009 the scenario were changed a bit:

OS-X: down from 9.93% in January to 9.81% end of May;

Linux: down from 1.02% in January to 0.99% end of May;

Windows XP: down from 62.21% in January to 61.54% end of May;

Windows Vista: up from 23.90% in January to 24.35% end of May;

Windows 7: the Market Share has grown to 0.42% from 0%

All the numbers shown above are just a mirror of the legal use of the different OS's. The number include the illegal use would change significantly.

That the use of Wondows 7 is that low is normal because as long as in Beta and even RC stage, there just a very low percentage of user worldwide would use the OS, and that users are mainly privateers.

The change in the Market Share within the next few month will be quite big I suppose because after Microsoft announced that the Release of Windows 7 will at October 2009 while the RTM will be at July 2009.

Also the changes Microsoft has done with the remove of the limitation in the Starter Edition of Windows 7, will force more User to go for that OS, special User's of Mobile Computer's and Device's.

One main question still remains: How much will be the cost of the different versions of Windows 7?

"There are three types of lies - lies, dam_n lies, and statistics."

But then again, I see a lot of Mistibushi Titans on the roads and very few Porches; perhaps a similar analogy can be drawn to your stats about market share?

And if you quote something, please provide a link so that we can see the methodology of the survey. Thank you.

No Link because No Quote!

It's a summery from what I've read on several sites, packed together in my head, use my fingers to type and post it here. Explanation enough?! Would be the same I ask you for the link what you've seen on the street!

First, Linux is a generic term referring to Unix-like computer operating systems based on the Linux kernel.

Now is this same Linux kernel, sometimes older, sometimes newer, used for most ADSL router/modem/switch combination. In basic are all Thai ADSL users Linux users.... and see that worldwide you get total different numbers...

A big information source says that a computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions. That is exactly what this little routers/modem/switch combination devices do...

Year after year this is done and its meaningless.  Even if I use Linux 99% of the time, if I have an XP installed in the primary location because I have to for dual boot and or the PC came with it, I am counted as a Windows user.  Now I went and downloaded the Win7 so I am also a win7 user, even if I delete it.  IMHO most people are using windows because it came in the box.   Please take the time to account for all the versions of linux iso's that have been downloaded over the net in the last year.   The numbers are huge.  Besides popular does not = better  :)

Edit ?? Who deleted the Richard-BBK post that was between these last two. The softpedia info and chart.? If a post is delete don't you normally provide a post to explain why? or is it just temp missing?

A PM was sent to the writer.

On the other hand the writer was breaking the rules to post more than the so named allowance of "Fair Use" and he also didn't has posted an link to the source, also a breach of the forum rules.

In real you're right, in real life such numbers are really meaningless! I agree with it. The reason I was writing that OP were to show the impact the new MS OS has on the whole Market at this time. How it will end up, nobody knows!

Your speech about the many different versions of Linux I've to admit that it's exactly why I didn't really like to start to work with it. To many differences in the different versions! I've to concentrate on the OS's our customers and therefore myself is using and that's are MS OS's (most), Apple's OS's (rarly) and the AS400! And that's enough.

Cheers.

Copyright rules are a serious matter, I did not break any copyright rules.

@Reimar

I not attack anybody, I would only know the source of the data, it is clear that you did generated the statistic yourself?

Which I had explained in my PM to you!

Same as the copyright rules, not from Thaivisa only but in special for Softpedia! Read the PM! And keep personal out of the public forum!

The statistics are worthless, we can all find news articles on the Internet, from sources that we can verify, which say other numbers. Even we can find articles in which Microsoft claims that they have sold or upgraded huge amounts of Windows XP users.

I have another theory, why newer versions of MS Windows have less users, as MS Windows gets more secure, they also find more and more techniques to also secure the OS against unlawful use.

With Windows 98, everybody was using it, then Windows 98SE and I believe overnight everybody upgraded... With Windows ME, some mostly the smarter people hold back to see what it was... As Windows ME had no DOS prompt anymore... But Windows ME eventual toke over and then the crying started – and the “Millennium Edition” won relative easy the 4th place in the “Worst Tech Products of All Time” from the American PC World magazine.

If I read it correct, MS Windows 7, will not only verify if the OS itself is genuine, but also offers this service to 3th party software companies. And as this is something like a apps-armor you find in some Linux distributions it needs to be upgraded regular. Basically every time some new software is released, and in the final release the hardware drivers also will digitally signed. Basically it means that maybe the basic installation of your computer works, you maybe able to disable the WGA, but then no driver updates.., not able to install the latest software, etc...

So basically, to be save and guarantee that your computer works everyday you need to buy at least the basic version, expected to cost around 4,000 Baht (32 bit). But then you not there yet, if you want to use software you can go for the free Open-Source OpenOffice or buy MS Office.... Adobe PhotoShop same same ….

So lets see if Windows 7 is almost impossible to illegally install, to a level it works for longer then 2 days... How many people are still using MS Windows...

To Microsoft Thailand, is more then 50% of the Windows versions installed in Thailand illegal... Therefore, because we have no way where the statistic data comes from we can say that MS Windows is closer to Apple Mac and Linux then we are made to believe.....

Nice theory, but just that: a theory!

Some of the data in my post were from German TV regarding SOLD products, NOT pirated products! Those data has let mer do a research via University libraries and other sources and all were just about sold products, not about used or pirated products.

And I don't think that any serious Institute, Organization or company will use data about illegal use of software for to build any report or database.

On the other hand companies like Softpedia didn't mind about that.

Regarding the Price/Cost of Windows 7, it's pure speculation to told any amount because will NOT publish the final cost till short before the official and public sale of Windows 7 will start on October 22. 2009.

Regardless of where you found the statistics quoted in your OP, they come from Net Applications, and their copyright states attribution is required along with a link unless you've paid them. Obviously only you and they know if you have paid them or not.

I didn't use any data from the site you posted the link and quote from.

I also didn't "found" a statistic but noted and wrote down the data from different sources regarding single products. There were not a statistic just an amount of sold and different products, here OS's, over a period of time and their changes in sold quantity. And that result is displayed in percentage in my post.

As I had explained several times that the data I posted were not copy and paste from some copyrighted sources and members like you keeping to admit to know better than me, who had done the search and posting, where that data came from, I close this thread now.
