Go to Pattay first. Here is why.

1. It is much cheaper.

2. It is easy to get around the city.

3. It is easy to get there from the BKK airport.

If you arrive during the day, the Bell bus costs only 200 baht and a mini van in Pattaya will take you to your hotel

If you arrive late in the evening, the taxis are plentiful and around 1300 baht or so.

4. So many restaurants with German, italian, swiss food etc. A good city to start with.

Go to other Thai places next time. It will be a better comparison. While in Pattaya there is plenty to do and see and it really is a pretty good first place to visit. Crocodile park, nong nooch botanical garden, etc. Day trip to Ko Lahn.

On the way home you can spend a day or two in Bangkok if you want. Big noisy city but has some things very much worth seeing. The BTS skytrain works very well and is cheap. The big Wat Thais are very nice. Dusit zoo very much worth a visit.

Go to Phuket the next time.

either. thailand is fuc_ked up no matter where you live.

This is crap. Why do idiots with opinions like this even post..........

shut up, i live here. really now, what is the difference between Phuket or Pattaya? either way, you aren't experiencing "Thailand", you are living in a tourist resort town with all the tourist resort town amenities. could be anywhere in any tropical country in southeast asia.

and, are you saying this country is not fuc_ked up? surely you're missing how awesome this country is.

and fwiw, i love living here.

you are contradicting yourself so there is not much to argue about here........

"thailand is fuc_ked up no matter where you live." your post

then

"surely you're missing how awesome this country is. and fwiw, i love living here."

Or maybe I am missing the point? You love living here because you believe the country is fcuked up?

Hmmmmm..........strange but I guess I understand (not, sound like illogical rot to me)

Then another piece of your wisdom, "could be anywhere in any tropical country in southeast asia." So these tourist towns look like Myanmar to you?

If Thailand is so screwed up then why in the name of all that's holy are any of you nay sayers living there? There is much to do and much to avoid, and it all depends on what someone CHOOSES out of life. I can't think of a country that ISN'T screwed up in some fashion. I live in one of the most ethnically mixed, socialist countries in the world, but still see all the problems. All the OP wants to know is what are the positives of some places he/she suggested. The ONLY place in Thailand I try to avoid is Phuket because it's so over priced by Thai standards. Other than that it is quite pretty with many lovely beaches.

The beach at Krabi in high season...

There are no sunsets from Patong beach.

Patong beach in Phuket...

But, further up the island is the smaller, but much nicer Laem Sing beach that has lovely sunsets.

Across the island is Rawai Beach that is much less developed than Patong beach and the resorts are cheaper. It got hit hard by the tsunami in 2004 and still hasn't totally recovered. There is little sign of the tsunami at Patong today.

You can take an interesting drive right around Phuket Island to get a better perspective. Patong beach is in the back ground with the tower hotel.

I much prefer Krabi to Phuket, but it all depends on what YOU want. In my estimation, Krabi offers a lot more for less money. There are some nice islands to explore, the beaches are relatively uncrowded and the water is warm and clean. The off shore islands like Phi Phi offer great snorkling with lots of marine life. Raleigh beach is a great place to visit with spectacular scenery. And, there still is a bit of night life.

There is lots more to Phuket than Patong beach. My main objection to Phuket is its comparible cost to other resort areas. It's even hard to find a cheap place to eat. However, there are less popular beaches than the Patong area. Night life is so so.

Pattaya is much cheaper than either Phuket or Krabi, and there is a LOT more night life. If you just want to sit on a beach it's okay but the water is polluted. If you want to swim you can go to Koh Larn island which is a 45 minute ferry ride for 40 baht return trip. There are so many hotel options in Pattaya it staggers the mind. You can get something for 400 baht a night, or go up to 5000 baht a night for 5 star.

Agreed - Krabi is much much better but a little to quite for some.

Out of those two options, I would select Phuket ANYTIME & EVERYTIME!

Pattaya is a hole! Steer clear!

You are correct if this is all you see when you visti Pattaya

But there is far more to Pattaya than Soi 6 bars. How about a view from on top of Jomptien Tower?

The beaches are a bit polluted and far narrower than Phuket or Krabi, but you can still sit out on the sand or play a game of volley ball.

And there are lots of interesting sights...

Ian, its second rate everything down there, use to be a great place 20 years ago, remember it well.

Sorry, I wasnt exactly refering to the bar sois when I was saying it is a shitehole. Ohhh and yes there are some things that are okay down there, but I'd still pick Phuket everytime, more options in Phuket than Pattaya.

Pattaya has lots of friendly bars where you can have a piss up and still walk back to your nearby hotel. No need to partake in the girly scene if you don't want to.

Paddy_s_bar.sized.jpg

The city is MUCH bigger than Phuket and has lots of accommodation of all types...

There are shopping malls both old and new

Plaza_market_department_store.sized.jpg

And there are many places for fresh sea food or fresh fruit and vegetables.

And if you like a walk there are many places for that as well

But you've got to pay a LOT more for everything in Phuket. If you have unlimited funds then Phuket is pretty good and it's much closer to the off shore fishing and diving. The Andaman sea is much nicer for snorkling than the bay of Thailand. That is why I prefer Krabi to Phuket. And Krabi is much closer to Kho Phi Phi were the snorkeling is better.

The only knock on Krabi is the night life is a little lacking if that is what you are into. It is better to take a lady with you to Krabi than try to pick one up when you are there.

I loved the snorkeling

Why Phuket or Pattaya? What you after? Beaches, culture, girls, beer, nightlife, peace and quiet, empty beautiful beaches, high prices, cheap prices, touristy? Thailand has a lot to offer than just Pattaya or Phuket!

you are trying way too hard to start an argument. Thailand is fuc_ked as a country and yes, that's one of the reasons why i enjoy the adventure of living here. it's pretty simple. but if you need to know the truth as to why i'm really living here, then you'll need to meet me in person. i'm kind of a big deal around here :)

Can any one of you tell me

I am shortly visiting Thailand :)

What do you think is better option to visit in Thailand Phukhet Island or Pattaya Beach?? :D

The OP asked about 2 places not 20.

I agree with most of the posts,Pattaya is a sh!t hole whilst Phuket (not just patong) is a beautiful island.

Having said that, Pattaya is a must, not just because I'm a dirt bag and a cheap b**tard but it really can be a great start.

My first time in LOS was spent in Pattaya and I loved it.

The next time you visit you can change your mind if you haven't fell in love that is :D

Sorry to hijack this post but if you were to live in Thailand for 1 year where would you choose:

- Bangkok

- Phuket

- Samui

- Chang Mai

- Pattaya/Jomtien

- Other

I've been to Thailand a few times but only for 2-3 weeks at a time. I'm shortly moving there for a year. I'll start in Bangkok as it's a place I know to a degree and have friends there. However I'm thinking after a couple of months it'd be nice to move elsewhere... but still undecided as to where! I'm sure I'll just go with the flow.

Troll

The OP hasn't reacted to any of the comments.

Look at his other postings. "Which animal do you like?" "Where do you like to travel?" or something like that.

I'm gonna have a beer.

What beer do you like? Heineken or Leo??????? :D
