dave_boo Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Well, seeing as how people come to this forum to get help, here's the list off issues that I'm currently having: A Lexmark printer....absolutely no dice and no drivers to be found. An HP printer...ditto. Games won't install. Sound requires clicking on a "Yes, I actually foocking plugged a cable into the headphone jack and want to use it, not alt-tab and miss part of the movie". 3ware card does not show up. Hotplugging SATA drives results in yet another crash. Bluetooth refuses to transfer files or even create a PAN. Subtitles won't load on my divx rips (and yes I own the dvds). Can not easily rip beforementioned dvds to a temp file and transcode them in a batch file. Wireless constantly drops connection. Latest driver updates (when I finally get them installed!) do not allow overclocking. Backing up my ipod onto the harddrive (a simple dump of the filesystem) on a new install resulted in a bunch of funny named files that were only accessible by itunes. Amarok allowed me to get them back in order and filed correctly. Boot up takes an inordinately long time; over a minute are the norm. Shutdown is a hit or miss affair...sometimes after 5 minutes it becomes necessary to hold down the power button. Speedstep only works from ~1200mhz up to 2500. Linux provides down to 800. Sensors are not supported; there is no information except from the GPU and the CPU....and the GPU always reads at +80. What's wrong and how do I fix it?
wpcoe Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 For starters, what Windows version are you using? (e.g. XP Home, XP Pro, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, 7 RC1, etc)
stumonster Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Dave - are you stirring the shirt ? lexmark dunno HP - cannot just get drivers , need to download massive meg file with all sorts of rubbish that won't fully install if you don't have system restore available for it bluetooth - what chipset , these usb units can be an absolute pain to get working <deleted> hot plugging sata without using the remove/eject on the drive - else windows will crack the sh1ts as it was busily indexing the drive for no reason dvd playing - use Media player classic home cinema or klite wifi ? usb/pci ? what chipset ? ipod - contact the turtlenecked jobs and kiss his arse sensors ? what mobo , asus has a good soft , pcprobe - also some freeware HD monitors out there windows , where everything just works and while we are here , I am at the moment losing hair with zone minder and xawtv trying to get a generic bt878 card to display video on a ubuntu machine.
paulh1978 Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 save all the stuff you need and take to the shop get them to fix it maybe you have a fake copy of windows
raro Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 An HP printer...ditto. it was my HP 1210 printer that had no drivers for Linux indeed. Found that out after I had SuSe on all office computers installed but couldn't get the f%#ing printer going. HP revealed eventually that there are no drivers available. Spent a night or two re-installing XP and everything worked fine after.
Richard-BKK Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 (edited) Hello Raro, I can give you support on all HP printers for major Linux distributions, Hewlett-Packard (HP) is one of the biggest motivators behind the Linux movement, similar to Brother they did not made all there hardware drivers open-source. I have a warranty to post links to a commercial website, but then how can we help people HP 1210 Linux Drivers Edited June 6, 2009 by Richard-BKK
Richard-BKK Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 (edited) The biggest problem is I, with this statement I mean, many people can get into your computer withing less then 15 minutes. And with this I presume the user had a up-to-date, version of Windows XP installed, none legate copies os Windows XP of Vista take less then 3 seconds to take control... PM me how to "recover" a Windows password Edited June 6, 2009 by Richard-BKK
dave_boo Posted June 6, 2009 Author Posted June 6, 2009 For starters, what Windows version are you using? (e.g. XP Home, XP Pro, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, 7 RC1, etc) Both XP Pro on the workstation and Vista Home Premium on the laptop. Dave - are you stirring the shirt ? Never! I need help. Oh, and BTW, on my laptop I was getting some gaming fix taken care of (Medal of Honor Allied Assault) and after I upped the settings to max in my Nvidia control panel the game loads up to the console and then crashes. Resetting the settings (sorry for using settings 2x) does nothing to alleviate the problem. lexmark dunno HP - cannot just get drivers , need to download massive meg file with all sorts of rubbish that won't fully install if you don't have system restore available for it Well, it appears that there are no drivers for Vista on this model...what to do? bluetooth - what chipset , these usb units can be an absolute pain to get working Will get back to you; it's onboard my laptop which I don't have right here. <deleted> hot plugging sata without using the remove/eject on the drive - else windows will crack the sh1ts as it was busily indexing the drive for no reason How does that help on my RAID array? Bit of a bummer that my controller supports it, drives support it, but the OS pukes when my array gets degraded and I need to swap in a replacement! Granted the hotspare works fine for the degradation, but why must the OS go down just to change the drive out? dvd playing - use Media player classic home cinema or klite It's not dvd (although sometimes those subtitles load and sometimes not...especially with Media player classic), but rather my xvid/mkv (x264) rips. wifi ? usb/pci ? what chipset ? Yep wifi. On board my laptop, connected via the mini-pciexpress (read USB). Ralink RT2571W. ipod - contact the turtlenecked jobs and kiss his arse But the ipod works fine....it's a Windows problem. sensors ? what mobo , asus has a good soft , pcprobe - also some freeware HD monitors out there MSI maiboard on my laptop. windows , where everything just works and while we are here , I am at the moment losing hair with zone minder and xawtv trying to get a generic bt878 card to display video on a ubuntu machine. save all the stuff you need and take to the shop get them to fix itmaybe you have a fake copy of windows Considering that I have the COA from a Newegg purchased XP Pro, and the Vista Home Premium was installed from the US bought machine, I don't think that's the problem... If I need to get a reinstall, what about all my programmes and settings (where do I back them up to and make sure they work after the re-install)? Are they gone? Am I going to have to re-install everything? What about my bookmarks and internet history? What about my stored conversations on pigdin? What about my emails? Am I going to have to reconfigure my LAN shared drives?
stumonster Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 MPC home theatre is not the same as the MPC in klite - you can get it from sourceforge are your subtitles embedded or are they separate ? separate , check to see settings has pointed at them. laptop , do the manuf drivers not work ? though I have rejected vista as an OS , especially home - ranks with winME as far as I am concerned. your MSI mobo - is the raid onboard , is it supposed to be hotswap , have you got the latest BIOS and drivers ? does MSI have a mobo health monitoring prog ? I have stuck with Asus mobos for the last 4 years as they have performed to expectations , except for waiting for bios updates for new release CPUs , though they have arrived slowly. and yes this section of the board has changed , but that is the way of things everywhere - just stick to the discussions that you think are useful and let the rest slide down the page.

Tywais Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 As a forum leader of the computer forum and having heavily supported and contributed to it for nearly 6 years I've never seen so much infighting between Linux and Windows aficionados. I'm going to give dave the benefit of the doubt that he started the topic specifically to get answers to his windows problems and as such let's get back on topic and try to give him some answers. I use both Windows and Linux systems. Windows because of my work and Linux for my servers and still consider Linux as the best server solutions available (IMHO). Each individual has to decide what is best for his purpose and it's not necessary to force a system down other's throat. Pluses and minuses or balanced debate is reasonable but pushing agendas because you think it is best for someone else is not. Thanks for understanding.

Again, if I could do the same things with Linux that I can do with Windows, I would change today. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be possible.
