Views Of Los By Farang Women

:D

Thought this could be an informative thread for all newbies as well as the established farang ladies to share their, thoughts, concerns, lessons and experiences. Let's share things that are going on around us, fun things to see and do, local happenings, places we frequent, and last but by no means least, where the shopping bargains are.

Let us help each other enjoy our time here :D

Sound off in :o

Mrs Merlin (&hubby) welcome to TV & the ladies forum...

For me the good things about LOS are the lifestyle, people, range of nationalities you can meet & become friends with (always good for cheap holidays :D ) friendships forged & maintained, the food, the relaxed attitude of nearly everyone holidaying, living or from there, my husband :D , culture, & history. The bad things are the mossies :o , too hot weather, occasional moron on the street who doesn't like you for your white skin & western attitude (& I'm not talking about the locals :D ) ) the difficulty in getting work, the sometime double standards applied to westerns & again (cause they are so bad) the mossies :D

Lessons learnt in 7 years in LOS....

Learn local customs, even if they can seems a bit ridiculous at times. It will help you in ways you couldn't imagine.

Always try new food at least once, you never know what you'll like & the thai people love to see your face go red when you eat a lot of chillis & they then love you for your "sanuk" attitude.

Learn to be objective, somethings you see will not please your western eyes & mentality but are not nessacarrily wrong.

Don't be over judgemental or act supirior, in many ways thais are more advanced that westerners & in others not, learn to live with the balance, keep a cool heart & try not to lose your temper too often, somethings take longer to get done in LOS, see above "likes" list re; relaxed attitudes & that can be frustrating but be jai yen & smile your complaints, it wil be done faster than if you shout.

Leanr some thai language, even if it;s just yes & no & hello, it will show you are trying & that is always appriciated.

As a women...

Learn to accept that this isn't the west & that regualr thai people tend to err on the conservative side, dress well & respectfully & be polite. Always show respect & wai to older people & learn the correct way to address them.

There is so much more but these to me are the main one I canthink of...

Last but most important of all....NEVER disrespect a buddha image, monk or temple & NEVER EVER diss the King or Royal family :D

good list Boo.

Let me stress the importance of appearance and attitude. People are judged by the way they appear and if you look like a bum or a tart then you will be treated as such. If you act in an arrogant way you will not be treated well, if you act in an agressive way you will be certain to have problems. Funny, how this applies to both sexes here.

As for being a woman in Thailand, I have to say the biggest problems I have encountered from men (besides my lazy sexist brother in law) have come from farang men who have a very bad attitude towards women in general and farang women in particular. Thai men have invariably treated me politely and with friendly respect.

Hi Boo,

Thanx for answering..I am hoping this can be not only helpful but informnative for new comers to Thai...In Jan. was our 12th year in Asia...the list you gave was great...one thing more to add to the list is the fact that it was me not the cultural shock I had read about in books (written by men ) by the way with Thai wives or g/f's but was the social shock of a blatant living and virtuallly sex oriented country in its entirety...from the workplace to grocery store to going out with your mate...Some of us understood..some got divorced..some got pissed off and I just grew tired of it after so long and thought there has to be more to life than this for these girls who only wanted to marry farang men to have a better life...well, enough for now

Hi,

I agree with you, Thai men treated me with respect and I also treated not only them but even the bar girls kindly..I haven't walked in their shoes or know them so it is bad to judge.. :o I started to truly enjoy activities around BKK Conburi,Rayong and Patty and groups of us would go to different places and visa trips, up to the Hill tribes etc. I think the only danger was from the Baht bus drivers in Patty.
