Hello all, can you please help?

My wife has told me about a government scheme to help Thai's buy cheap houses.

I think that the name is uaathon but have googled it in english to no avail. (we dont have thai font on ouir computer)

Is there anyone who could write this in Thai so that we can search Thai websites.

the words you mentioned are at the end: เอื้ออาทร

What do we call this in English? "Welfare housing" comes to mind.

American parlance (not sure about elsewhere) also uses the phrases "housing project(s)" and "project housing" -- and thus the slang term "the projects".

I see Wikipedia's general term for gov't-owned cheap housing is simply "public housing".

I noticed a sign at the entrance to one soi commemorating it as a model for the community because it was สะอาดและเอื้ออาทร. That threw me at first, as I only recalled the term in relation to some housing scheme of Thaksin's - and nobody whom I asked could explain it in the context of that street.

But dictionaries define it as "generous," "helpful," "to be considerate," thus, it makes good sense: keeping your area clean demonstrates consideration toward others.

A related term, which I favour, is เอื้อเฟื้อเผื่อแผ่ - which just rolls off the tongue. Really, try it and see...

In Australia we have a Housing Commission and Housing Commission Housing (or Public Housing, more generally). In the case of โครงการบ้านเอื้ออาทร, seems they refer to the scheme as the National Housing Authority.

See the pinned thread Using Thai on Your Computer for how to type Thai on your computer. If you can browse websites in Thai with it, I'd be surprised if it doesn't give you a solution, though there might just be a problem if isn't actually your computer. A physical Thai keyboard is not necessary, and won't help if typing Thai can't be done from a Roman script keyboard. If you still have problems, I suggest you start a new thread and then the key points can be added to the thread I mentioned when your problems have been solved.

I don't know where you're from, but physical Thai keyboards are usually one key short compared to European models.

Off topic, but Richard's right. Unless your computer was produced in the 20th century, it almost certainly came with Thai fonts and the capability to type Thai right out of the box. It's just a matter of activating input for various languages. In Windows this is done from the control panel.

No extra hardware is necessary -- a "Thai keyboard" just means that they have painted Thai letters on it. You can type Thai with any keyboard, if you know how to touch-type, and if you don't, you can still hunt and peck, or use an on-screen "soft" keyboard to point-and-click the letters you want.

If you are using internet explorer try going to the view pull down menu then encoding, select Thai and you should be able to read Thai.
