Cannonball Tree -couroupita Guianensis

Featured Replies

Hi, I am trying to locate where in Thailand I can buy young saplings of the Cannonball tree.

Can anyone give me any help.

Thanks

Have a chat to the monks at Bangkok´s Wat Arun temple, they might let you take some cuttings for a small fee.

In fact, have a good sniff around the many Wats in Thailand, it's surprising what grows in the long established temples.

You may have a very long wait to see Couroupita Guianensis bear any balls....... err, fruit. :)

Keep us posted. :D

Good idea - I have been pillaging the surrounding area for small cuttings and young trees but never seen this one growing anywhere. I do recall seeing some mention in a paper last year about this tree and that someone was selling them but cannot now find the article. I will try the temple if I cannot locate anywhere else.

Thanks.

I saw it in bloom while at Wat Pun On in Chiang Mai. I'd never seen a plant / tree like it before. Beautiful!

Several sites say it is native to South America, which makes this description intriguing - "Couroupita Guianensis is considered a sacred tree in India by Hindus. Buddhist scriptures tell us that the Lord Buddha was born under the shade of a Sala Tree and died between two of these trees. Couroupita Guianensis is native to South America but is widely found in Thailand especially in Temple grounds. The tree is called 'Sala Lankaa' in Thailand." http://www.thaiguide...annonball-tree/
