Charged over 110 forged passports

February 17, 2005

THAI police have arrested a Spaniard and a Dutchman suspected of forging 110 European passports to be smuggled out of the country.

The pair, identified as Dutch national Thomas Marinus Diependaal, 45, and Spaniard Miguel Antonio Grazon Megias, 33, were charged with producing and using fake official documents after a sting operation in Bangkok yesterdat Wednesday.

Police said they learned the two suspects were to deliver fake passports at a city department store to an informant, who had been told to smuggle them to England.

Authorities found 40 Belgian, 30 French and 40 Portuguese passports, all forged, in the men's belongings, police said.

The two denied the charges.

The European Union has accused Thailand of being a hub for the forgery of official documents, which facilitates human trafficking around the globe.

Thai authorities countered by saying the trade was controlled by foreigners.

Last month Thai police arrested a Bangladeshi man in Bangkok accused of providing a fake passport to top Asian terror suspect Hambali, who was captured in Thailand in August 2003.

Last February a Frenchman and a German were arrested at Bangkok's international airport for attempting to smuggle out of the country more than 400 fake European passports and visa seals.

So the guy that was supposed to take them to England was also a grass! Naughty Boy......... :D Obviously another farang ( that owes the Police for whatever reason ), grassing up his mates.

Farangs in Thailand just cannot be trusted in any way shape or form, that's for sure.

Very nice class of farang in the Kingdom it seems, eventually Thailand may make the Visa process for coming into Thailand as difficult as it is for Thai's wishing to travel to Farang countries.

The criminal element coming into Thailand makes it bad for all decent farangs like me. :o

:o

I would love a couple of fake passports..class...anyone???

:D I don't live in thailand, and I'm moving there very soon cause I've spent so much money on tickets that it's become rediculous to keep going back and forth from london. It's such a nice place to be, I don't understand why some idiots have to get involved in this traffic, NOT being Thai (which means they are likely to get black banned from Thailand if they get caught. What a waste...they should consider themselves lucky to be some of the few people that have the "luxury" to live in such a place, and they should do everything possible to extend their stay there rather than doing this shit to get whatever amount of money. See you soon.

Are the Thai authorities saying that because the trade is controlled by foreigners they can do/will do nothing about it?

Or are they implying that only foreigners carry out terrible crimes such as this and not sweet, innocent Thais?

So your trying to distance yourself from all other farangs are you, in the hope perhaps that your different somehow?

You seem to be defending criminals and take an accusing attitude towards informers. Then you make a generalization by saying hes obviously a farang.

Heres a hint...your not Thai, get over yourself.

Doctor John

Been watching a bit too much TV have you ?

Police informant = good guy !!

"Honour amongst thieves"/"grasses are bad" is just something put out on TV shows & movies. It's the criminals that are scum, not the people that get them put away.

Do you know what kind of people use fake passports ? People smugglers, terrorists, drug smugglers - nice guys like that.

Can't see how you can critisize the informant at all.

Whoa, there! Who's counting you as one of the decent farang in Thailand? Your logic states that farang cannot be trusted at all, which, if true, would have to mean that there are no decent farang in Thailand to begin with. That must include you, too! :D

Unless you're an abberation, which I would tend to believe that you are, but of a different class. :D

Always nice to have someone liven up the topic and make themselves a target to boot! :D:D:D

Nice to hear from you again, and yes, I'm back in LOS.

Just ran across this little bit of added coverage with certainly a new perspective at the end of it:

(CNN) -- Police in Thailand have charged a Dutchman and a Spaniard with passport forgery, according to a Thai media report.

Authorities said they seized 110 fake passports -- 40 Belgian, 30 French and 40 Portuguese -- on Wednesday from the men, aged 45 and 33, local media said.

Investigators from the United States, Britain, Australia and Spain are in Thailand and have asked Thai authorities to question the pair about last year's Madrid train bombings and al-Qaeda.

They indeed were doing everything possible to extend their stay... by as much as 2-3 years just north of Bangkok, perhaps.

Hmmmm, seems these people obviously were doing something cheesy. But the informant obviously was the police from the very same country area, such as Interpol who had advance knowledge of what these two were doing and maintained contact with the Thai Police. How else would Thai Police know of such large amount of fake passports etc????

Hmmm, as of John he sort of is like me, I also hate informers, trying to do in someone, but at same time one has to balance facts based on their activities. Something like fake passports or major drug smuggling ought to be informed to proper authorities. Bringing in your own sex toys or sexy CD's or some personal stuff etc what ever need not be informed since it is considered private. In any rate some informers do give you plenty of trouble if you end up being lined up within their eyesights.

For the most part Thais are tolerant of what you do. Just don't make major waves among yourself and mind your own business and they will leave you alone, as long as you don't bring things up from under the table or do something above your own personal means or reasoning. Whatever you do just keep quiet and mind it yourself and you will do just fine here in Thailand.

As of those two pups, welcome to Hotel Hilton. They got two more beds ready for ya.

All Blacks are thieves?

Do you refer to the Rugby Team, or is there something more sinister in 'YOUR' words?

"Boring tosser", now that's more like it, you appear to be very articulate and a wonderful wordsmith, I always look forward to your informative posts with great anticipation.

Thankyou Harry, you never let me down. :o

Tippaporn,

Of course I am not popular, if I wanted to be popular I would join in with the Thai bashing and the " I am farang therefore I must be right " brigade.

Not my style as you know. :D
