Motorbike Red Plate Question

Featured Replies

I posted this in the motorbike section, but it was recommended that I post it here because temporary red plates are not used outside Phuket? Is that right?

My mate and I bought a couple of off road bikes, but now the dealer is shut and it has been, and may be, a long time before we get the green books and plates. Currently the bikes have ginormous red and white temporary plates that break and fly off every time we go off-roading. I see a lot of new bikes have much smaller oval red plates now, about a quarter of the size and fraction of the weight as ours. Is it possible/legal to have one made like that for our bikes (with same numbers of course) so ours don't keep falling off? It has been suggested that these plates are bogus anyway. We carry the invoice with us hoping that is enough in case we get stopped and questioned.

No problem getting the smaller plates made. The red plate is only temporary until the white plate with the real number is given.

Strictly speaking, red plates are only allowed on the road from sun up until sun down.

Phuket red plates works outside Phuket too, but only genuine red plates with redplate book with your vehicle registered (with pen) in the book. Thats the law.

But they dont stop you at the bridge, and I v never had problem with the fake ones, or with no plate. Good idea to carry copy of invoice and insurance. I do at least 15k km a year on red plates (20 new bikes, cars and trucks in 6 years), and never had a redplate problem. But going long distance I want the legal ones with redplatebook
