Restoring My Computer To A Usable State

Featured Replies

My darling 4 year old girl loves to play the games I download for her. Unfortunately after she is finished the computer always seems to be a little screwed up.

I'm looking for some FREE program that will restore my computer each time to the workable state before she started playing.

I have had a look at "Sandeboxie" but that has pages of information and instructions to leave me confused. I seem to remember some mention about a program that restores the computer to the previous state after a re-boot, this sounds like the kind of program I'm looking for.

I'm sure I'm not the only one with eager young fingers attacking the keyboard what do you do to get your computer back?

:)

Long time ago a found this message in another forum

What is AyRecovery?

1.An instant recovery software solution.

2.Records 1000 system snapshots, you can restore your system to any snapshot.

3.Takes less than 5 seconds to record a snapshot.

4.Takes less than 20 seconds to restore your system from system crash.

5.Complete solution for removing spyware, virus, adware and other known or unknown PC issues.

6.Release you from PC obstacles.

Anyone who are interest in AyRecovery might download the program at http://www.ayrecovery.com (Virus free)

Activate the program using the following Product ID: 611109-636864-030963(For one-year free)(Or you may send request to [email protected] if the license is full)

I installed that program and it runs indeed free for one year. I can report I have installed it on all of my computer.

After a year it is going to cost but you can try it a year for free. Not sure the key is still valid but worth a try.

That program has already saved me from some real disaster. and it can do what you are looking for.

there are a couple of software solutions available. they all have their pros & they have their cons. as each additional application... in the end... adds to system malfunction...

i'd suggest 2 approaches:

a) create a system restore point whenever computer starts up. yes, it can be done within windows without additional software. & yes, it can be setup to run automatically. (depending on your win version... it'll try to do it anyhow)

B) create a user account for your daughter. &!, i'd say..., most important... try to spend time with her while she's "computering". that'll help more than any technical solution - esp in years to come na :-)

c) i just guess you don't want to get into real "sandboxing". i doubt it'll help you.

all best

I have not used XP etc for some years, as I remember one can go way back in the restore menu and pick from several restore points that were auto-generated by MS.

Does she have her own user account?

That would seem to be the way to go, with you staying as Admin.

As mentioned Windows Steady State does exactly what you are asking for and it's perfectly free (as long as you run windows on your pc).

You just make a user account for her and then you can set just about 1000 settings with what she can and can't do, also it will roll back her profile each time she logs of.

for the geeks out there, I'd set up a virtual machine with VM Ware, install XP....take a snap shot and let her play in that environment.  You just restore the snap shot after she is done and if she downloads any viruses during play, it stays in the virtual machine (not your own) and will be wiped when you restore the snapshot....But only do this if you are a geek....

Thanks all for your suggestions. Will give them a shot, sure something will be simple enough for me to understand. :D

I'm not really worried about her going to dodgy sites, she plays mainly games already on the computer and she knows the few kids sites she can visit. Anyway she is in the room with us so we keep an eye. The main problem is that a lot of these games use different screen resolutions and change settings that don't always revert back.

She also likes to experiment and loves to click on icons to see what pops up and drag windows around and generally leave a typical kids mess :)

After posting I had a thought about using System Restore (I'm running XP Pro) didn't know you could auto generate restore points. :D

Cheers

I dont use XP often, but there are about 10 system restore points I can access, which M$ generated.

Chances are you are good to go.

If she is out on the net, be very careful - there are some real sickos out there, who are master

psychologists, in drag. She does not want to take a 'liking' to anyone who is trolling.

Youngsters have enough imaginary friends, off-line, as it is.
