There are plenty of serviced apartments/hotels as well as private residences for rent in Pattaya.

Have a look at the classifieds in the Pattaya Mail here.

And internet access is not a problem.

Actually, if your ass is in Thailand while playing poker -- no matter where the servers are -- you're breaking the law. If you don't think so, try setting up an internet gambling den where everyone is playing on servers based elsewhere...and try explaining that to the cops.

Gamblers may face asset seizures

Revenue Dept to keep eye on bank accounts

BANGKOK: -- The government's crackdown on football betting is gathering momentum with the Justice Ministry threatening to enforce the anti-money laundering law against gamblers during Euro 2004 football tournament.

Justice Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana said football gamblers now faced the risk of having their assets seized under the anti-money laundering law.

Mr Pongthep expressed confidence that the measure would work _ especially with cooperation from the Revenue Department.

''The department will keep an eye on the movements of suspected bank accounts. We can definitely run checks on them, as we're working as a team,'' he said.

Mr Pongthep also noted that tax measures would be imposed on foreign bookmakers who operate on the Internet.

''They're legal, but they'll have to pay taxes under Thai law,'' he said.

The Juvenile Welfare Protection Police will enforce the child protection law to keep youngsters from gambling.

The division's action is prompted by various surveys which identify teenaged schoolboys as one of the most active gambling groups.

Division commander Pol Col Suras Udomrat said anyone encouraging children to gamble would face a three-month jail term and/or 30,000 baht fine.

Pol Col Suras said children that gambling would also be punished under the law.

The division has also launched a campaign to deter football gambling among youngsters at schools.

The target of its campaign is the 15 all-boy schools across the city.

Pol Maj-Gen Kosin Hinthao, chief of Crime Suppression Division, said the CSD was keeping a close watch on 100 suspected bookmakers nationwide.

High on the list were bookies operating in the Hat Yai district of Songkhla and the Sungai-kolok district of Narathiwat, who have connections with bookies in Malaysia and England.

''It's a large network that also includes some Bangkok-based bookmakers,'' he said.

The CSD commander said it was difficult to arrest these suspects as they conducted their business via telephone and the internet.

''The only way to get them, is to keep them under surveillance before taking any action,'' he said.

In addition, many local bookmakers will reportedly be conducting their business at casinos across the Cambodian border during the three-week tournament.

A Thai gambler, who identified himself as Winai, confirmed bookmakers were heading to the Cambodian town of Poi Pet, opposite the Aranyaprathet district of Sa Kaeo province.

''Their main customers are Thais back home. They do their business via ATMs,'' he said.

I challenge anyone to find a case of someone being prosecuted for gambling over the internet in Thailand.

Don't bother looking; I doubt there's been a case yet.  Wanna be the first?

OK, I'll make it a little easier, can you back up your statement that

Actually, if your ass is in Thailand while playing poker -- no matter where the servers are -- you're breaking the law. If you don't think so, try setting up an internet gambling den where everyone is playing on servers based elsewhere...and try explaining that to the cops.
by posting the Thai law which states that gambling over the internet is illegal? You may have a hard time as present gambling legislation dates back to 1935: Gambling Act B.E. 2478 (1935), so I'll accept a statement from any government official which states that gambling over the internet is illegal.

You're a little too eager to assume things too, as even if you were correct that gambling over the internet is illegal, every poker site that I know of has play money tables where you just play for fun and not for money, they also have free to enter tournaments where you can win money without even paying anything to enter. So you can play poker over the internet without even gambling.

Nobody's being prosecuted probably because so few are doing it. Gambling, porno, and politically sensitive sites are, on gov't orders, blocked by Thai ISPs, or at least they make the attempt. Last I read there were about 2,500 being blocked. Of course there are so many porno sites they can hardly block many of them . . . dunno about gambling. Some of you gambling from Thailand can let us know. :o

Many Thais play on Ladbrokes, their' site is available in 14 languages, one of which is Thai. As Ladbrokes is owned by Hilton group they are probably the most responsible site on the net. US internet gambling laws are ambiguous so Ladbrokes do not allow US citizens to gamble with them. Here is their restricted territories statement:

We cannot open accounts, or process bets or financial transactions, for individuals residing in USA or Germany.

We accept only horse racing, greyhound racing, casino and poker bets, and not lotto, Balls, or other games bets, from individuals residing in Holland.

We accept only sports bets from individuals residing in Gibraltar. We do not take any bets from residents of Hong Kong whilst they are in Hong Kong. However, Hong Kong residents can have an account and deposit money whilst in Hong Kong for use when outwith the territory.

No mention of Thailand, why is that? Maybe something to do with what Justice Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana said:
Mr Pongthep also noted that tax measures would be imposed on foreign bookmakers who operate on the Internet.

''They're legal, but they'll have to pay taxes under Thai law,'' he said.

I've made a simple request, look forward to the replies.

Konangrit,

Which ISP's are you using?

I certainly cannot access the ladbrokes website through Ji-net.

This is the (Thai only) message I get...

And yes, gambling in any form is illegal whatever means is used...

However the fine for the gamblers would be 500 Baht (same as happens with the Thai card players if caught). The big offender is the organizer. But I don't see Thailand going after Ladbrokes yet!!!

If you would invite a couple of Thais to join you in an on-line pokergame, and it would get to the ears of the police I can guarantee you will end up in big problems....

If you just play yourself inside the privacy of your home you will never ever get bothered :o

I'm not threatening you; I couldn't give a rat's ass what you do.

Live in Thailand for a while, though, and you will discover that nothing is illegal until you piss someone off...then even the most mundane thing you can imagine will be grounds for deportation or imprisonment.

If you can get through life under the radar, without ever getting up someone's nose, well then you're pretty safe. Stick around a while, though, and there's a pretty good chance you'll develop some enemies.

Good luck!

Monty, I use a proxy.

Totally agree with your point about organising a get together to play on-line, that would be asking for trouble.

I have to disagree with you that gambling in any form is illegal in Thailand. The most obvious exception to this is the lottery, another is horse racing in Bangkok and several provinces where tote betting on course is allowed.

PvtDick,

Appologies if I took your post out of context. The point I'm making is that there is no specific law banning internet gambling, and no other laws are currently being used to prosecute internet gamblers. Of course, that could all change, and I'm sure if the government wished to crackdown on this then they could dig up any number of old laws to prosecute with. I'm sure it would be highly publicized first, as is the case when the government launches any crackdown.

I'll also add that if you read my posts you'll notice that I haven't stated anywhere that it is legal to gamble over the internet, just that I have never heard of anyone being prosecuted for it, and I have done a lot of research on the subject. I still welcome anyone to point out a case which contradicts what I'm saying, or even a quote from a government official which states that they will prosecute anyone if caught. As Monty points out, gambling really isn't a major crime in Thailand, it's the organizer or bookmaker who receives the main punishment. I see news reports everyday where gambling dens are raided, the money confiscated, and the gamblers given a fine and released, which generally isn't the case for whoever organized it.

Thanks and good luck to you too.
