July 18, 200917 yr I have an older laptop that I would like to get back together. It use to belong to one of my previous companies and they let me buy it for $50. It is an OLD IBM laptop, Thinkpad, from around 2001. Only need it to access internet... I would like to have somebody here in bangkok completely wipe it clean and start new with XP. It has all kinds of corporate stuff on it (dual boot, admin secutity, etc). I have had some work done in Pantip one time, and also at Fortune Mall, years ago. But does anybody have a specific place they would recommend going to? I would appreciate the help!!!! Craig
July 18, 200917 yr Is this "beauty" the model with the 10 GB HDD and 64 MB RAM? please post the specs
July 19, 200917 yr Author No, luckily! I got it after my company went bankrupt. It is really locked down, so trying to deal with that. I went to Pantip yesterday and got the Windows XP DVD, but can't install. I click the install button, a quick DOS CMD window opens up, but that is it! I may just drop it off at some place in Pantip and have them do a clean install....too techie for me!

Some shops are specialized in fixing old notebooks. As far as I remember Pantip has a shop on the 3rd or 4/fl which sells and repairs second hand notebooks. Thats maybe the right address for you. Guess theres another one on Pantip basement when you enter on the left hand side. I recommend to look around in the "back roads". In Pantip there are many small shops and I trust you will find the right place. Contact Global Solution (3/fl?) if they can refurbish.
July 19, 200917 yr Will it even play a DVD? It may just be CD at that age. But I don't know anything about IBM laptops so only a guess.
July 19, 200917 yr Author That's a good question! But yes, it plays. I can get some of the options displayed to work, but not the one that does the install! Had a heck of a time getting the virtual device drivers to work properly. Kept getting an error. Man, this is a learning process! I have not used this PC in years. It is a very lightweight PC, so good for travel. My other PC is too darn heavy. I am just going to head over to Pantip and go to the place Webfact suggests. Wish me luck! If nothing else, I get to wander around Pantip. Not a bad thing to do... Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!! Craig
July 21, 200917 yr Author Thanks, Webfact! Went to the 3rd floor of Pantip yesterday. A store called WBC. They installed Windows 7, Excel, Word, NOD32 Antivirus, etc. Clean install and everything works great! Cost was 400B and it took them about 3 hours...OK, that was because this PC is soooo slow! But works great for only accessing the internet. Craig

Don’t forget to download and install free online copies of Malware bytes, Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition and Avast Antivirus.
