[mods: It's perfectly legal to hack the WDTV. Nothing to worry about]

Has anybody installed one of the custom firmwares on the WDTV?

See here:

http://wiki.wdtv.org/doku.php?id=wdtv_firmware_hacks

All of these support USB Ethernet, which is cool. What I'd want out of it is to connect a USB hub (WDTV already handles this with the stock firmware, so that should just work), a USB ethernet adapter, a USB hard drive. Then connect the ethernet to the router, create a Samba share on the WDTV so I can access the USB hard drive connected to the WDTV via network.

Then, I can just upload movies to that share over WiFi. No more plugging / unplugging USB devices...

Update: Ok so it seems like WDLXTV firmware has an ftp server running, so at the very least you can ftp in and upload movies that way. Not bad, really. Perfect excuse to get a Wireless-N router :)

Why don't you just get a NAS?

I've got one that is old as hel_l (still uses PATA), but it's nice and quiet and thus can just sit in a corner doing its job....
