US marines clean up Phuket beach

PHUKET: -- A team of US marines and their family members today descended on Phuket’s Kamala Beach to help clear up debris left by December’s tsunami.

Working with local police officers, the team of over 70 people was led by US naval attach้ Kenneth Ray Porter.

Tomorrow the team will move on to Takua Pa district in Phang-nga, one of the areas worst hit by the tsunami, where the marines will hand over educational equipment to Baan Bang Muang school and the Yanyao tsunami relief centre.

They will also donate USD2,500 for the complete overhaul of the piped water system for schools and villagers in Baan Kalim, which was totally destroyed in the disaster.
