1300 athletes expected for Asian Martial Arts Games

BANGKOK (thaivisa.com): -- More than 1,300 athletes from 40 countries will descend on Thailand early next month when the country hosts the first Asian Martial Arts Games.

From August 1 through 9 the athletes will compete in for 121 gold medals in judo, jujitsu, karatedo, kickboxing, kurash, muaythai, pencak silat, taekwando, wushu, and kungfu at three Bangkok venues and the Suphan Buri Sports School in Suphan Buri.

Thailand was selected by the Olympic Council of Asia to host the event and last October the then Cabinet approved the proposal by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

The slogan for the 1st Asian Martial Arts Games is The Games of Spirit – The Land of Smiles, and the organizing committee will use Hanuman Yindee, depicted in Ramayana, the Great Asian epic, as a white super monkey with every kind of fighting skill as the games’ mascot.

The theree Bangkok venues are the Indoor Stadium Sports Complex at Hua Mark, the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok and the Bangkok Metropolitan Youth Center (Thai-Japanese) Stadium.

The opening ceremony will take place at the Indoor Stadium Sports Complex at Hua Mark on August 1, at 6:00 pm.
