Laptop Os Locked Up.

Featured Replies

My Dad's put that much crap on his laptop, mainly anti-virus and security stuff that the system has given up. I've managed to delete a couple of the offending programs but it's still not working, or working that slowly as to be useless. A mate installed a new OS on it and he's also bought a new desktop but he wants a couple of the documents off the old laptop.

Any ideas?

assuming you are running win xp -

either burn the documents you want to transfer on DVD,

or copy them to a Flash stick or copy them to a portable HDD.

I understand you can still access the old PC? If not try to access safe mode.

Not sure if you can burn a DVD in safe mode but you can copy your files to a removable media.

Just a word of caution for the new machine.

Only ever use one Anti-Virus program as having more than one will cause conflicts and problems. If you want more than one spyware program that is probably OK, but I would advise a combined Anti-virus / spyware program such as the Free AVG or Avast

Thanks guys. The problem is the programs/files take forever to open... if they do at all. I need to free the system up so so I can get at the documents to copy them.

The old boy's nearly 90 so he's not doing a bad job I suppose. I've just got to keep him away from those antivirus programs, he thinks more is better..... :)

pull the HDD from the lappy and stick it an external caddy.

I suggest again to use safe mode! It make things easier for you. You may not be able to uninstall programs but at least to copy!

I had a similar problem with my laptop and this is what worked for me. I didn't lose a thing.

Does that rule still hold with the newer version of Comodo 3.10.1xx that has an AV?

I have been running it as well as the free AVG 3.5.392. Should I remove AVG?

(yep, got the Windows XP firewall turned off)

for my own part I would remove it!

If he is 90, leave him be - he might even consider it fast!

So this is what we did.

We created a second operating system and went into Windows Explorer.

The programs in the first system came up we so we deleted everyone that was anything to do with antivirus, adware etc....

And all was well.

Download MALWAREBYTE (anti spyware), CCLEANER for cleaning out junks.

I have been using FREE AVG, CCLEANER, Malwarebyte on all my computer.

TuneUp Utilities would work well here as would Malware Bytes as mentioned.

If you just wanted documents off it then boot into Safe Mode (already mentioned) and get what you want and then format the lot :)

Installing that new OS may well have wiped out all the old data.......

A Windows install usually formats the C: Drive......... :)

Unless the data is in another partition, it is lost.

However, do try putting the disk in an external box and attempt to recover the data.

If nothing else you get a spare disk for backups etc.
