I am pretty new to all this stuff and have been following all the posts on slow connections and i just ipconfig/all and my dns server is showing as 192.168.1.1. I am using a linksys router wrt54gl. Is this correct or should i add the maxnet dns servers in the router set up page or use an opendns etc. i have been having trouble opening bbc along with many others. any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks Jeff

192.168.1.1 is your router. Check if any DNS is set there if yes - I suggest to delete it there!!!

Set it manually in TCP/IP setting - either "obtain DNS automatically" as to be seen in the image set your own DNS

Thanks for that webfact thats what i couldn't figure out why my router would show up as dns server. There was nothing in my dns settings in the router. i had my tcp/ip both set to auto in internet properties. I will manually add them will try maxnet dns servers first and see if it is better.

thanks jeff

Well that's a lot better.

Aus almost instant.

Firefox now so fast was slow to open.

U.K. besides the bbc almost instant.

I starting to believe something or someone is blocking the bbc. All i want to do is listen to the cricket.

Thanks jeff.

Glad to hear that.

Regarding BBC

Are u using Maxnet DNS? Try to set the DNS you can view in the thumbnail. It may work:

If you don't mind post the BBC link and I have it checked with another provider

Having 192.168.1.1 as both DNS and gateway is very normal, but as webfact said you should obtain all these automatic, unless you have a specific need not to do so.

If you obtain them automatic you will still notice that the DNS is 192.168.1.1, this is due to configuration on your router which is acting as a caching/forwarding DNS, so it will do the DNS request and return it to you. This allow you to change the DNS server for all computers attached to your router, but just changing the DNS on the router itself.

This information is passed to the clients from the router at boot through DHCP, the same service that provide your computer with an IP number.

Hope this cleared the confusion a little.

must be a maxnet thing or is it possibly an avg firewall issue??? what do you think. thanks Jeff

I'm glad you cleared that up. very interesting how it all works. I have been thinking what the hel_l have i done this time.

Since doing it all manually the pages seem to be loading a lot quicker. maybe wishful thinking. i am using a static ip mainly as i have my dreambox connected to the net and computer and now it looks like i may need to change my dns server. thanks for the info.
