The Thai lady owner of the fish n chip shop on the road to Chalong pier passed away recently & now Tom her American husband has taken his own life. A tragic story of a couple who seemed to struggle with their business over the years but managed to keep it going & always produced the same good quality fush n chips. At this stage I have no news on where Tom is to be cremated.

Firstly my condolences to the family's concerned.

I first met Tom and Porn when I first sailed into Phuket 18 yrs ago on a world journey and went no further because people like them were around. Truly wonderful people who as Valentine points out made a go of it against all adversities. It was Toms wish they would be together in passing if they could not remain together in life, knowing their closeness it is easy to understand.

The latest that I can find out is that their son Patrick who came from the U.S. for his mothers funeral has returned as his fathers body is still being held in Vacharia hospital awaiting a coroners report. He intends to return when the autopsy is finalized. I think unnecessary as it was clearly a case of him ending his own life. This is all very sad.

I think very little more can be said except to say Patrick we all share your sorrow and may Tom and Porn rest in peace.

That's very sad to read. I knew them both from eating an occasional lunch in their little shop over the past 4 years. Tom's wife was not so old, I remember an older lady who I assumed was the wife's mother. How did she die ?

Some one correct me if I'm wrong but Toms wife Porn was around 58 yrs. Tom was 61.

Porn died as a result of a ( stroke ) brain blood clot, after about 5 days in Vachaira hospital intensive are and was cremated I think, last Friday. 'Kata' I think you remember the lady herself, she was a young 58 that's what makes it all so hard.

I remember them very well. But Tom suffered from depression as well and it was difficult eating in his shop due to it.

They will be missed and RIP.

Tom was a self confessed alcoholic which could account for his depression & sometimes was a pain in the backside when sitting down to eat. Not rude but his chatter could become annoying & detract from the pleasure of eating. Porn would often scold him & send him scurrying back to his TV & gin. I was there one time last year & he was looking pretty stressed out. He related a tale of woe as some up country family were visiting so he hid his bottle of gin. The problem was he was drunk when he hid it & now could not remember where it was so he set off across the road to buy a couple of cheap beers to get back in the frame of mind whereby he could find his gin.

Occasionally there was a niece around which LIK may have confused for the wife. Porn was always asking after my GF as we used to sit down & eat in the early days (GF was fond of the fish burger) & the couple were known to be helpful to others given their meagre resources. Even my kids remember them from long ago & were shocked to hear the news.

For my taste they had the best fush n chips in town, great fish with excellent batter & proper chips unlike the skinny little ones that many people try to pass off for chips these days. Some restaurants now consider crumbed stick like fish pieces as battered fish but it aint so. The only one I know that has decent battered fish now is Sizzlers although I hope there are others.

American chip shop owner commits suicide in Phuket

CHALONG, PHUKET: Friends and family are this week morning the loss of Thomas and Parnpan Quigly, otherwise known as ‘Uncle Tom’ and ‘Auntie Porn’, who ran the island’s first fish and chip shop on the road to Chalong Pier.

Mr Quigly, a 61-year-old American, was found dead of a .22 caliber gunshot wound to the head inside the couple’s home on Tuesday morning.

Police are treating Mr Quigly’s death as suicide, Chalong Police Col Chana Sudtimas told the Gazette.

A week earlier, his wife Parnpan Quigly, 59, had died unexpectedly of a stroke.

In the days following his wife’s death, Mr Quigly was preparing his repatriation to be with the couple’s only son Patrick, a 29 year-old student in the US.

Neighbors said that the night before Mr Quigly’s death they had all had dinner together with Patrick, who had recently flown in to attend his mother’s funeral.

“We talked about the old days and Tom seemed okay, but I know he was sad to leave Thailand and didn’t want his son to worry about him,” said Mrs Yao, a close friend of the family.

“They will be sorely missed, they were two sweet souls and everyone loved them,” said Mrs Yao. – Kitima Pornmongkhonwat and Fraser Morton

Saddest news I've had in a long time.

I loved those 2. They seemed to me to always to buzz of each other.

She was one on the loveliest people you could ever meet. Always asked about our new born son. She had a beautifully infectious laugh that was heard often.

Tom was a good guy. Drank too much sure but many do.

They were indeed 2 sweet souls who will be very sorely missed by our family and am pretty sure all who had the pleasure to meet them.

Such sad news, hard to believe, I recall my first visit.............

Feeling like a good feed of "Fush 'n Chups" instead of Thai, kai.

The little shop caught my eye.

It was 5 years ago, I first met Tom and Porn.

Neva missed a feed, chat and drink every visit since.

Porn was a lovely lady, Tom a good guy to chat with whilst eating and drinking,
